Claim: Images authentically depict the Eiffel Tower illuminated blue in support of Democrats' victories in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. Rating: ContextSome images of the Paris landmark shared on social media were authentic but miscaptioned. Others displayed evidence of AI generation. The Eiffel Tower has a well-documented history of being lit blue for various occasions, but there was no evidence that this happened in celebration of Democratic victories in the 2026 U.S. midterms. A rumor that the Eiffel Tower was illuminated with blue lights to celebrate Democrats' victory in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections circulated in early November. Following the election, people on social media shared purported images of the world-famous Paris landmark lit blue, with one post claiming this signified France stood "in solidarity with the new leadership in the House and Senate." The claim gained popularity as the national conversation focused on the results of the midterms, in which Democrats, typically represented by the color blue, landed a decisive victory. The claim's popularity led Snopes readers to ask that we look into it. There was no evidence France illuminated the Eiffel Tower blue to celebrate the results of the U.S. midterms. Rather, some of the images shared in the posts were authentic, but taken during previous instances of the landmark being illuminated blue. Others displayed evidence of AI generation and were therefore fake. As such, we've rated this claim false. For instance, one Facebook user shared a photo of the Eiffel Tower illuminated blue with the text, "They gave us the Statue of Liberty and now they lit up the Eiffel Tower in blue to celebrate with America." But that image shows the landmark illuminated blue with the 12 stars of the European Union, which was done in both 2008 and 2022 to celebrate French leadership of the EU. The Facebook user who shared the image also pointed out that some users were "attaching erroneous meaning to an unrelated photo." Similar images to the one shared in the post from both 2008 and 2022 are available to view on the Getty Images repository, but our searches returned none from 2026. Other images shared in some versions of the claim appeared to be generated using artificial intelligence. The artificial intelligence detector Pangram said it was highly likely this particular image, used in the most-popular instances of the rumor, was generated with AI, though it should be noted that such platforms are not always reliable. However, both OpenAI's Verify tool and Google's Gemini SynthID scan also confirmed the presence of a SynthID, which Google describes as "a technology developed by Google DeepMind that adds imperceptible digital watermarks to AI-generated content." (OpenAI Verify) (Pangram) (Google) A search of the Eiffel Tower's location tag on Instagram revealed dozens of posts that included photos of the landmark the week of the U.S. midterm elections, many of them at night, that clearly shows the landmark lit in its usual golden color. Further, searches of Bing, Google, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo revealed no credible or relevant results about France illuminating the Eiffel Tower in blue as a result of the midterm elections, which would have been widely reported as international news. The official Eiffel Tower website has an entire page dedicated to the Eiffel Tower's blue illuminations, which states that "over the years, the monument has been bathed in blue to mark major events and support symbolic causes," naming "Europe, autism awareness, children's rights, tributes, or the colors of the French and Ukrainian flags," specifically. According to the website, the first day the landmark was illuminated blue was May 9, 2006, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Europe Day. The site included other instances of the tower going fully blue in 2008, 2012, 2019 and 2021, as well as other instances of the blue lights being part of an overall display to convey the colors of the French and Ukrainian flags on the landmark. There are other examples of the landmark's blue hue over the years available online. Photographer Peter Talke posted a photo of the Eiffel Tower illuminated in blue to his blog on Aug. 31, 2009. In September 2026, an Instagram user posted a blue-tinged Eiffel Tower among other photographs from Paris.
