This year, Delta Air Lines has cut a total of seven routes from its Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) hub. This comes off the back of otherwise a strong year for the airline at the Minnesota airport, where it has recorded an increase in overall operations by 1.1% when compared to the same time last year. According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, the airline on average schedules a total of 2,266 flights per week from Minneapolis. This makes it the airline's third-largest base in the country after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) with more than 6,100 weekly flights, and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), which registers around 2,370 weekly flights. In April, the SkyTeam carrier axed its nonstop services to St. Maarten (SXM), Mazatlán (MZT) and Tulum (TQO). At the time, the airline suggested that these routes were experiencing lower-than-expected passenger demand and strong competition from other low-cost carriers. Specifically, Delta faced heavy leisure competition from budget-friendly Sun Country Airlines. Tulum, an airport that was initially suggested to be the jewel in the Riviera Maya crown, to alleviate the congestion at Cancun and make it easier for travelers to reach the region's picturesque resorts and beaches. The airport has ultimately had its bubble burst, with airlines that aggressively overexpanded into the market, having an oversupply of seats. These included services to Williston (XWA) in North Dakota, Marquette (MQT) in Michigan, Great Falls (GTF) in Montana, and Wilmington (ILM) in North Carolina. These changes came as the airline signalled weaker-than-usual passenger demand and a broader consolidation of routes to strong hub locations. Williston saw all Delta flights permanently end, as the airline failed to achieve financial stability on the route. The service had been backed by local government officials who approved up to $2.7 million in subsidies, but the airline ultimately operated under target breakeven loads, which led to the airline exiting the airport. Marquette can see passengers operate through other connections in Detroit, and Great Falls passengers are now able to connect via Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). For Wilmington, the airline trimmed its operations at Wilmington to mitigate ongoing high operational costs. Delta now serves the airport via Atlanta. Minneapolis/St. Paul Holds Strong As Delta's Third Busiest Base Credit: Austin Deppe | Shutterstock While seven routes no longer operate from Minneapolis, the airport still holds strong as the airline's third busiest base by weekly flight departures. As previously mentioned, the facility registers more than 2,200 weekly departures, ahead of other major hubs including Salt Lake City, LaGuardia, and New York JFK Airport.
