(Source: ITG)A five-storey building housing a student paying guest accommodation collapsed in southwest Delhi's Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon, killing at least two people. Several people, mostly students, are feared trapped under the rubble as a multi-agency search and rescue operation continues.According to Delhi Police, the building was around 40 to 50 years old and comprised a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as a paying guest accommodation.Police said repair work was underway in the basement when the building collapsed."So far, 9 people have been rescued and shifted to hospitals. Search and rescue operations are continuing," Delhi Police said, citing information gathered through a local enquiry. The incident took place near Delhi University's South Campus, close to Nanakpura Gurdwara. The Delhi Fire Service received information about the collapse at 1.33 pm, while a PCR call was received at the South Campus police station a minute later.Nine people have been rescued so far, according to information from AIIMS sources. Three of those rescued were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. The exact number of people trapped under the rubble has not yet been officially confirmed. However, witnesses at the site estimated that around 40 to 50 people could be trapped beneath the debris.The collapsed structure was a five-storey boys' paying guest accommodation called "Hostel Daze". The building reportedly had around 10 rooms, while a medical shop operated on the ground floor.As rescue teams continued to clear the debris, there were also reports of calls being received from people believed to be trapped inside."We are even getting calls from those who are trapped inside. Teams are continuously in touch with those who are trapped inside; we pray to god that all people are safe," a police official said.MULTI-AGENCY RESCUE OPERATION UNDERWAYA multi-agency operation has been launched at the site, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, CATS and Civil Defence involved in the rescue effort.At least 12 fire tenders have been pressed into service. Oxygen cylinders have also been brought to the site to provide oxygen to people who may be trapped beneath the rubble as rescuers work to reach them.Local residents joined the rescue effort soon after the collapse, using their hands and available tools to remove debris and search for survivors.Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed to control the crowd and keep the narrow lanes clear for ambulances and rescue vehicles.
