Deep depression in Bay of Bengal may bring heavy rain to A.P. from Sept. 23

Giri A low-pressure area over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining regions has moved west-northwestwards and now lies centred over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, according to Prakhar Jain, Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA).The system is likely to move further west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal by Monday and into a deep depression over the west-central Bay by Tuesday. It is expected to move towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts by Wednesday morning.Under its influence, scattered heavy rain is likely in Andhra Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday, with the intensity expected to increase on Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated areas may receive heavy to very heavy rain during the latter period.Coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to experience strong surface winds of 50 to 60 kmph. The system is expected to bring much-needed rain to the State, which has recorded a cumulative rainfall deficit of about 47% since the onset of the southwest monsoon.For Monday (September 21), the APSDMA has forecast localised moderate rain accompanied by lightning in Alluri Sitarama Raju, Polavaram, Nandyal and Kadapa districts. Light to moderate rain is likely in the remaining districts.The authorities have advised people in low-lying areas to exercise caution in view of the possibility of waterlogging.Fishermen at sea have been advised to return to the coast immediately as the sea conditions are likely to turn rough.
