For the past couple of decades, the Green Lantern franchise has remained somewhat dormant, often relegated to the background of DC’s Trinity after struggling to regain its footing in pop culture. However, as the mid-2020s take shape, the Green Lanterns are undergoing a significant revitalization, largely due to ambitious new projects like DC Comics' Absolute Universe and DC Studios' DCU. The Green Lanterns' renaissance is heavily driven by DCU titles like Superman and Lanterns, which focus on rebuilding the Green Lantern cosmic lore on the big and the small screen from the ground up. James Gunn's Superman marks the first live-action appearance by Guy Gardner, while HBO's Lanterns TV series places Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Sinestro in the spotlight. While divisive, Lanterns is a success for DC Studios, and it sets up a promising future for heroes like John Stewart and Guy Gardner. With a highly promising trajectory across both movie and TV, the Green Lanterns are finally on a path to reclaim their rightful place as a cornerstone of the DC multiverse. Hal Jordan Is Officially Confirmed To Star In New DC Black Label Series Green Lantern: The Dying Of The Light; Written By Jason Aaron; Art By Tirso Cons At the New York Comic Con 2026, DC Comics announces Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light, a Black Label comic series written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Tirso Cons. The five-issue, oversized miniseries presents an older, hardened Hal Jordan who escapes from prison after serving a grueling twenty-year sentence. Stripped of his former glory and desperate to clear his name, Hal sets out into a hostile universe while wielding an unreliable power ring. Aaron has explicitly discarded the grand spectacle traditionally associated with the Green Lantern Corps; and instead, Hal's malfunctioning ring restricts him to producing smaller constructs, which forces the aging hero to rely on brutality and sheer willpower. Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light promises to be a spiritual successor to Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Like the seasoned Batman from TDKR, the ideals of the Green Lantern Corps have probably withered away, leaving an older Hal Jordan to stage a desperate one-man crusade. How exactly Hal Jordan ends up imprisoned is unknown, but his twenty-year sentence hints at a betrayal. Just as Bruce Wayne had to fight through societal rot in the near future without his peak-youth endurance, Hal Jordan will be welcomed by a universe that has moved past him while wrestling with a weapon that could fail him at any second. Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light will release in March 2027.
