‘Day Drinker’ Trailer: Johnny Depp Out For Revenge In Lionsgate “Ghost Story”

Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for Day Drinker, a supernatural revenge thriller marking one of Johnny Depp‘s first starring roles in a studio project in years, which is slated for release in theaters on March 26, 2027. Co-starring Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz, the film from director Marc Webb revolves around a private-yacht bartender (Cline) who encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Depp). Soon, the pair find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming. The trailer finds Depp gray-haired, with a scraggly beard, eeries eyes and thick accent, getting thrown to the ground and arrested. He’s reminiscent of the unstoppable force Max Cady, played most recently by Javier Bardem, in Apple’s Cape Fear. “I’ve made a living out of misbehavior,” Depp warns. “I see no tangible reason to stop now.” Watch on Deadline Later, his character shares, “My story, perhaps it’s a tale of revenge, or perhaps something worse. What if all this is a ghost story? Or maybe I’m just another day drinker.” Visually, the trailer promises gun and axe-driven combat, a perhaps supernaturally gifted Cruz, and some time out on the water — also establishing what has led Depp to seek revenge, as a dead woman drifts down into the sea. Marc Webb directed Day Drinker from a script by Zach Dean with Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner, Dean and Nathan Kahane producing. Exec producers included Dan Friedkin, Micah Green, Daniel Steinman, Stephen Deuters, Jason Forman, Sam Sarkar, Webb, Eric Sherman, Sarah Hong, Scott LaStaiti, Adrián Guerra and Xavier Parache. The film is Depp and Cruz’s fourth together, following Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Murder on the Orient Express. It marks one of Depp’s first big tests, as he returns to big leading man roles for the first time since the conclusion of his U.S. defamation case against Amber Heard in 2022. The first hitting theaters is Ti West’s take on Ebenezer for Paramount, out November 13; prior to this year, his last studio film was Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018.
