Cubs To Select B.J. Murray

The Cubs are planning to select the contract of corner infielder B.J. Murray when rosters expand tomorrow, per Robert Murray of FanSided. The Bahamas Baseball Association was first to report that the Bahamian-born switch-hitter was on his way to the majors. He’s not on the 40-man roster, but Chicago has an open spot. Murray is a 26-year-old who’s in his sixth professional season. The Cubs drafted him out of Florida Atlantic in the 15th round back in 2021. Murray currently ranks 19th among Cubs prospects at MLB.com and 27th at FanGraphs. He’s hitting .294/.395/.500 with 16 homers, nine steals, a 13.4% walk rate and a 21.3% strikeout rate. MLB.com’s report notes that he has one of the best combinations of power and plate discipline in the Cubs’ system and calls him a savvy baserunner who can add value on the basepaths despite modest speed. He was far more productive as a right-handed hitter than as a lefty last year, but Murray has nearly identical platoon splits so far in 2026. Murray has spent the bulk of his career playing the infield corners, though he has limited experience in left field and has also logged 10 games at second base. He’s no stranger to large stages for prospects, having played in the 2023 Futures Game and having twice suited up for Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic. The Cubs are largely set at the infield corners with Michael Busch at first and Alex Bregman at third. Their DH slot is typically occupied by Michael Conforto these days, but Murray can mix in at any of the three spots, and his switch-hitting bat makes him a potential versatile bench bat for skipper Craig Counsell down the stretch.
