HULL spoiled Coventry’s Premier League party and continued their shock perfect start to the season. Unfortunately, what followed did not live up to the hype. Lampard’s side were arguably the better side for most of the game, but never truly looked like coming away with anything. The Swede thought he had won a penalty after 24 minutes, tumbling to the ground under contact from Bobby Thomas in the box. But referee Josh Smith was confident that the challenge was shoulder-to-shoulder and waved play straight on. Coventry’s best chance came when Hull defender Nobel Mendy’s attempt to head away a cross landed on the lap of Awoniyi. The deflection took Awoniyi by surprise, who jerked his thigh towards the ball and forced a last ditch save from Konstantinos Tzolakis. Substitute Millar found himself one-on-one with Coventry stopper Carl Rushworth after a sensational throughball from Mohamed Belloumi. The Canadian remained calm and tucked it past Rushworth to send the travelling fans wild and pile misery on the hopeful home crowd. Millar had done incredibly well to remain cool having just fluffed an almost identical chance moments before. The former Liverpool and Fulham academy ace scuffed a one-on-one wide of the post that had come from an Oli McBurnie pass just a few minutes prior. It is nine months too early to suggest that this was a relegation scrap, but it would be entirely unsurprising to see both sides fighting for survival come May. And three points for Hull away from home could prove to be gold dust when the season gets down to the nitty gritty. Lampard’s Coventry, meanwhile, will have seen this as a game they should have won. And with a trip to Manchester City on the horizon, the Sky Blues are going to need a miracle if they want to register their first Prem points. Comment now
