Conor Coady lands shock new England job after having Wrexham contract ripped up

FORMER England star Conor Coady has landed a shock England role just days after having his Wrexham contract terminated. The defender, who spent time with Wolves and Leicester City in the Premier League, joined the Welsh outfit in 2025. Now he has returned to the England set-up for the first time since 2022 – but this time in a new capacity as a men’s U21 assistant coach. Sign up for the Football newsletter Thank you! He will be joined by ex-Coventry City defender Paul Williams as the pair step in for departing coach Ashley Cole. Cole spent five years as an assistant coach to the side, currently helmed by Lee Carsley. That period saw the youth group win back-to-back Euros titles, featuring talent like Anthony Gordon, Morgan Gibbs-White and Cole Palmer. But he has stepped away to pursue new opportunities, having kicked off his solo managerial career when he was briefly made head coach of Italian Serie B outfit Cesena for the final stretch of last season. Carsley said: “I first want to pay tribute to Ashley, who played a major part in our two EURO wins and also had a key role in the current campaign with his tactical and technical knowledge. “As well as being an important part of our coaching team, he also had a positive, inspirational impact on the players given his own elite experience. The Merseyside native returned to his boyhood club Liverpool earlier this week to help coach their U21s. But he has already made the switch to the FA, with Carsley adding: “I’m excited to work with Conor and Paul.
