The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Skill Training and Employment Sector Development Scheme was launched on October 31, marking the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The initiative will initially begin in five districts, with the state government planning to expand Skill and Employment Zones to all 75 districts. The larger objective is to give young people access to skill training and improve their chances of finding employment.FIVE DISTRICTS FIRST, 75 IN THE LONG RUNWith an investment of Rs 1,725 crore, the scheme is expected to strengthen the state's skill development infrastructure and create new opportunities for young jobseekers. The first phase will cover five districts, before the proposed expansion across Uttar Pradesh. The Skill and Employment Zones are intended to bring training and employment-related opportunities closer to young people across the state. However, details about the districts selected for the initial rollout, the courses to be offered, eligibility requirements and the number of candidates expected to benefit are yet to be outlined.THE BIG QUESTION: WILL TRAINING LEAD TO JOBS?For young jobseekers, the success of the scheme will depend on how effectively training is connected with actual employment opportunities. Expanding Skill and Employment Zones across 75 districts could improve access to job-oriented training, particularly for candidates who may otherwise have limited opportunities nearby. The next steps will be to establish the centres, outline the training programmes and build connections with employers. Details on implementation and recruitment partnerships will also be important in understanding the scheme's reach.Ultimately, the Rs 1,725 crore initiative will have to deliver more than training opportunities. Its impact will be measured by how many young people acquire relevant skills and move into jobs.(With PTI inputs)- Ends
