Claude can now read your AGENTS.md files, but the community isn't so enthused about it

Published Sep 19, 2026, 1:49 AM EDT Simon is a Computer Science BSc graduate who has been writing about technology since 2014, and using Windows machines since 3.1. After working for an indie game studio and acting as the family's go-to technician for all computer issues, he found his passion for writing and decided to use his skill set to write about all things tech. Since beginning his writing career, he has written for many different publications such as WorldStart, Listverse, and MakeTechEasier. However, after finding his home at MakeUseOf in February 2019, he would eventually move on to its sister site, XDA, to bring the latest and greatest in Windows, Linux, and DIY electronics. AGENTS.md stays the portable standard; CLAUDE.md is still best for Claude-specific syntax. If you use multiple AI agents, including Claude, you may have noticed that while other agents play nicely with an AGENTS.md file, Claude specifically prefers a CLAUDE.md file. After years of people needing workarounds to get their config files working on all their agents, Anthropic has finally revealed native support for AGENTS.md files. The problem is, the community isn't as excited as Anthropic may like. Claude can now use AGENTS.md files, but its users don't seem to think it's that big a deal If you've never dabbled with these files before, AI agents mostly use a file called AGENTS.md to store all the parameters for the AI. The cool thing about the AGENTS.md file is that it's the universal standard for AI models, meaning you can copy it, port it to different AIs, and not have to keep telling each model what you want and don't want. Claude didn't play ball with AGENTS.md; it opted instead for its own type of file called CLAUDE.md. This included special instructions for Claude Code, and while other AIs could read it if pointed toward it, it contained entries that the AI may not know what to do with. Now, Anthropic has announced that Claude can read AGENTS.md files instead of only relying on CLAUDE.md files. While comments on the X thread are positive, people on the ClaudeAI subreddit are lessenthused. Anthropic pinned this feature as a big change, but people quickly point out that it was a small, long-overdue tweak. In fact, if people mostly rely on Claude to get their work done, they're better off using a CLAUDE.md file to make use of the special syntax anyway. Oh, well; can't please them all.
