President Donald Trump may have called CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s Moscow visit “semi-routine,” but it was more likely a warning to the Kremlin against testing NATO’s eastern flank, TVP World news director Adam Jasser said. Jasser told TVP World’s News in Depth program that Ratcliffe’s rare trip was “the central event this week,” arguing that Washington deliberately allowed it to become public as part of its signaling to Moscow. A warning to Putin Ratcliffe met Russian foreign intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin in Moscow on Wednesday. Reuters reported that concerns about possible Russian operations against NATO were raised, although they were not necessarily the main focus. “I think the simplest explanation is that Mr. Ratcliffe delivered some kind of a warning to Vladimir Putin,” Jasser said. Trump later said Putin “is not going to be attacking a NATO territory.” Jasser suggested the president may have been expressing confidence that Moscow had understood Washington’s message. Russia has been expanding military infrastructure capable of supporting up to 115,000 troops near NATO’s Baltic borders. Mixed signals from Washington At the same time, US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby was in Brussels discussing the Pentagon’s review of American forces in Europe. The review could reshape the deployment of roughly 80,000 US troops as Washington presses European allies to take greater responsibility for conventional defense. Jasser said the timing exposed an apparent contradiction: Ratcliffe appeared to be warning Moscow against escalation while Washington was considering reductions in its European military footprint. “But the main message to Moscow is we have planes in the air. We have troops on the ground still, and we are an alliance,” he said. Belarus adds another risk. Alexander Lukashenko traveled to Russia after ordering a snap combat-readiness inspection of Belarusian forces. Jasser said Belarus could again serve as a staging ground if Moscow chose to escalate. “You know, Putin is desperate and desperate.
