MANCHESTER, England (CN) — U.S. singer Chris Brown avoided immediate jail time Monday after a British court sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for one year, for hitting a man over the head with a bottle in a crowded London nightclub.Judge Tony Baumgartner handed down the sentence at Southwark Crown Court, where Brown pleaded guilty to affray over the February 2023 attack on Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub in Mayfair. The offense carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.Brown’s vocal coach and friend, Omololu Akinlolu, also received a suspended prison sentence, with the judge ordering four months in prison, also suspended for one year. The case drew dozens of fans to the courthouse as Brown, a Grammy Award-winner who rose to fame as a teenager, faced sentencing for an attack that prosecutors said was captured on surveillance footage.Baumgartner said Brown played the leading role in the violence and that striking someone repeatedly over the head with a glass bottle was “plainly dangerous.”“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, particularly when directed towards the head,” carried the risk of causing significantly more serious injury than Diaw ultimately sustained, the judge said. The judge said the attack took place in a confined, crowded nightclub with other people nearby.Although the incident lasted no more than about 20 seconds, he said, the violence during that brief period was intense.Attack captured on cameraAccording to the Crown Prosecution Service, the government agency responsible for prosecuting criminal cases in England and Wales, Brown approached Diaw from the dance floor at about 3 a.m. and struck him twice over the head with a glass tequila bottle.Prosecutors said Akinlolu, 40, then joined the attack, punching Diaw in the head. The pair continued assaulting him as he tried to escape through the club, prosecutors said, with Akinlolu kicking Diaw while he was sitting on the floor.Diaw was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with head and knee injuries. A scan showed no abnormality and he was discharged with crutches and pain relief.Baumgartner said he would not sentence either defendant on the basis of injuries or long-term consequences he could not be sure the attack had caused. But he added that harm was not limited to the physical injuries ultimately proved.Akinlolu’s lawyer, Laurie-Anne Power, told the court her client genuinely believed Brown was under attack because he viewed the singer as a brother.Diaw was not in court for the sentencing. The court heard that he had not supported the prosecution and had at one point withdrawn his support for the case.Guilty plea and previous convictionsBrown initially denied the accusations before pleading guilty to one count of affray. In return, prosecutors dropped charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon. The judge said Brown’s previous convictions involving violence in 2009 and 2013 could aggravate his sentence, although their weight had substantially diminished over time.He said he did not regard Brown as someone who had persistently offended in the intervening years.Brown’s lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins, asked the court to consider his long career, family responsibilities and charitable work. She said he deeply regretted the nightclub incident and offered a profound apology.Bennett-Jenkins also argued Diaw had not suffered fractures or broken skin and that the court should consider those facts when sentencing. The judge said Brown’s fame, commercial success and professional standing did not entitle him to special treatment, although his stable employment, responsibilities to others and charitable contributions were relevant to the sentence. Both men pleaded guilty at the first reasonable opportunity, allowing the judge to apply the maximum one-third reduction for their pleas.Career marked by legal troublesBrown rose to stardom in the early 2000s, when his debut solo album was released and his single “Run It!” topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks. His career was also marked by a widely publicized assault on his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, in 2009. Brown pleaded guilty to assault in that case.In the London case, police issued an arrest warrant after investigators discovered Brown and Akinlolu had left the U.K.Brown was arrested at a Manchester hotel on May 15, 2025, when he returned to Britain for a concert during his world tour. He was later released on bail of 5 million pounds ($6.67 million), which allowed him to tour Europe and North America last summer. After Monday’s sentencing, Brown blew a kiss toward cheering fans as he made his way to his vehicle without answering reporters’ questions.Claire Campbell, a senior crown prosecutor, described the nightclub incident as a vicious and unprovoked attack. She said the prosecution service would continue pursuing cases involving violence regardless of a defendant’s public profile.Courthouse News reporter James Francis Whitehead is based in England.Subscribe to our free newslettersOur weekly newsletter Closing Arguments offers the latest about ongoing trials, major litigation and rulings in courthouses around the U.S. and the world, while the monthly Under the Lights dishes the legal dirt from Hollywood, sports, Big Tech and the arts.Additional Reads
