Warning: this article contains spoilers for Chicago Fire season 15, episode 3, called "Take the Hit."Chicago Fire wasted no time in delivering a huge blow to the Firehouse 51 family in season 15. The payoff of the season 14 finale's high-stakes cliffhanger didn't kill off any of the characters who were at the most risk, but Cruz suffered an injury that paralyzed him from the waist down. While sad, actor Joe Miñoso's departure was announced before Fire returned in NBC's 2026 fall premiere schedule, so it was a safe bet that something major was going to happen to Cruz. What fans couldn't have predicted ahead of season 15 was the identity of his replacement. The entire Firehouse 51 crew has been off-kilter in season 15, and not just because Squad 3 is short on firefighters due to Cruz's injury. Severide's promotion to captain came with all the responsibilities of leading the firehouse, without accumulating all the experience of a battalion chief like Boden. Kidd has been managing a group of candidates, some of whom have much more potential as future firefighters than others. Chicago Fire needed somebody to step up at 51, and an unlikely candidate now has a larger role. Ballard, a firefighter working under Kidd's leadership on Truck 81, was originally a minor enough part of the show that he easily ranked as one of the characters Chicago Fire could actually kill off after the season 14 cliffhanger. He's not exactly on par with characters like Severide and Kidd, but season 15 has already showcased him enough to guarantee that 51 still feels full despite the upcoming loss of Cruz. Firehouse 51 Needed To Flesh Out Another Firefighter Peter Gordon/NBC Joe Miñoso was one of the last remaining actors who had been on board Chicago Fire from the very beginning, so it was inevitable that his absence would leave a void. Similar to how the One Chicago drama started writing out Jesse Spencer's exit well before his final episode as a series regular, the stage is already being set for what will permanently take Cruz out of active duty at the CFD. While most of Cruz's final arc has relied on standout performances from Miñoso, the subtle rise of Ballard has been part of the story as well. Chicago Fire isn't waiting until Cruz is already gone to start filling the gaps in the ensemble. That's not to say Ballard is being used as Cruz 2.0 and joining Squad 3 to literally replace Miñoso's character. He's still part of Kidd's Truck crew. Fire was already missing the fun that Cruz brought to 51 after just two episodes of season 15, and Ballard has stepped up as of the third. Ballard no longer feels like a random firefighter who floats in the background to fill out the Truck crew. He's been interacting more and more with the rest of the first responders, and developing much more of a personality. That was certainly welcome in "Take the Hit," thanks to the influx of Firehouse 51 probies causing tension and Tony's brush with death. The episode needed the kind of fun that Cruz was excellent at providing over 15 seasons of Chicago Fire, and Ballard was the unlikely character who delivered. There have already been enough changes in season 15 that Chicago Fire is better served by fleshing out an existing character than introducing yet another one to replace Cruz right off the bat. The drama has had 15 seasons to develop Capp and Tony, without giving them much more to do. It was time for somebody else to be fleshed out, and Fire is nailing it so far by slowly but surely adding new layers to Ballard. When Cruz Is Leaving Chicago Fire Peter Gordon/NBC Cruz made major strides towards his recovery in "Take the Hit," when a visit from Herrmann was enough to pull him back to the firehouse. While Cruz originally came back to 51 to confront Herrmann, he ultimately stuck around long enough to reunite with the rest of his friends, have a heart-to-heart with Severide, and work on some tools for Squad 3. He regained enough motivation to start going back to physical therapy before the end of the episode. None of that is to say that Cruz is going to make a miraculous recovery in season 15, but Chicago Fire has used his final run of episodes to set him up for an optimistic ending. The milestone 300th episode will mark the character's swan swong, with Cruz visiting Firehouse 51 to say his farewells. Returning to active duty won't be an option, despite his return to physical therapy. Chicago Fire used the 200th episode to say goodbye to Casey back in season 10, so it's fitting that another milestone is used to say goodbye to Cruz. It remains to be seen if Ballard will continue developing his personality during Cruz's final arc as a series regular. The 300th episode of Chicago Fire will air on Wednesday, November 4 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
