Channel 4 Planning To Unveil “Deep” Job Cuts After Internal Review

Channel 4, the British broadcaster behind hits including The Great British Bake Off, is preparing to announce significant job cuts on Wednesday. Priya Dogra, the former Warner Bros. Discovery executive who became Channel 4’s CEO in March, has completed an internal strategic review, as the network grapples with ad market contraction and unprecedented competition for viewers. Dogra is expected to announce the conclusions of the review tomorrow, with insiders predicting that there will be “deep” cuts to its 1,276-strong workforce. The Guardian reported on Tuesday that as many as 300 jobs, around a quarter of Channel 4’s workforce, could be at risk of redundancy. It would be the biggest round of layoffs in Channel 4’s 43-year history. Watch on Deadline Channel 4 declined to comment on the figures cited by The Guardian. A spokesperson said: “As we have shared publicly, under the leadership of our new CEO, we have been assessing Channel 4’s strategic direction, including a comprehensive review of the structure, shape and size of our organisation. “We have committed to keeping Channel 4 staff updated in a timely and transparent way, so any organisational change will be shared with them first and we won’t be commenting on speculation.” Insiders have been fearing the worst for some time. One person described Wednesday as “D-day,” saying that impact of Dogra’s review would be “deep and wide.” Other sources were shocked at The Guardian report. Dogra refused to rule out significant job cuts when answering a question from Deadline at the Creative Cities Convention in May. “I am doing a review of the strategy, the structure, the shape and size of the organization,” she said at the time. “It’s too early to judge where that review will go.” Channel 4’s job cuts follow similar redundancies at the BBC, which has committed to reducing its workforce by 10%, equating to around 2,000 layoffs. Channel 4’s last major round of redundancies came in 2024 when former CEO Alex Mahon announced 200 job cuts.
