According to him, the presence of a false ceiling helped prevent the falling material from causing a major impact. A ceiling fan also helped limit the impact of the falling plaster.The people who sustained injuries suffered minor bruises and did not have cuts or major wounds, Reddy said. He added that all those affected were safe and doing well.WARD VACATED AS PRECAUTIONHospital authorities immediately shifted patients and others from the affected area to another ward after being alerted to the falling ceiling material. “The incident was limited to small pieces of the ceiling falling,” Reddy said, adding that there was no major damage to the hospital building.The affected ward was vacated as a precautionary measure and the area was secured. Hospital authorities also assessed the situation after the incident to ensure that there was no further immediate risk to patients, attendants or staff. The superintendent said hospital officials were alerted when small pieces of the ceiling began falling. The response team acted immediately and moved people away from the affected portion of the building.OLD HOSPITAL BUILDINGReddy said the MGM Hospital building is old and that the incident highlighted some of the problems associated with the ageing structure.“At the same time, we are moving towards a new hospital facility,” he said.According to the superintendent, the government has been closely monitoring the construction of the new hospital and has directed officials to expedite the work. The construction is progressing and authorities have been asked to work towards opening the new facility at the earliest.Reddy said the new hospital is expected to address the infrastructure-related concerns associated with the existing building once it becomes operational.NO MAJOR DAMAGE REPORTEDThe superintendent reiterated that there was no major damage or serious injury in the ceiling incident. The affected ward has been vacated and patients were shifted to another area to ensure their safety.Hospital authorities are continuing to monitor the affected section of the building.
