CBS’ Hit 26-Year Franchise Gets “Unprecedented” New Spinoff Movie Update

Published Nov 5, 2026, 12:28 PM EST Jeff Dodge (he/him), a published author and graduate of Western Washington University, has been a TV news editor for many years and has had the chance to interview multiple reality show stars, including Randy Jackson, Nick Cannon, Heidi Klum, Mel B and John Cena. Fun Fact: he’s been to every single Idol Live! Tour. The hit CBS reality show Survivor is getting an animated spinoff film, and now the project is being called "unprecedented." Paramount Animation announced the movie in June, with Survivor host Jeff Probst on board as an executive producer. The story revolves around a group of animals who travel to a remote island to compete in a survival competition. At the time, Probst said this film would include elements that Survivor fans have come to know and love. Five months have now passed since that announcement, and a new update sheds light on what this animated Survivor film means to Paramount. The Wrap reports that people associated with the entertainment company are impressed with the deal that Paramount Animation President Jennifer Dodge was able to make to get the film off the ground. She has only been in this position since January but has already shown her prowess. An anonymous individual familiar with the negotiations called it "unprecedented" what Dodge was able to pull off by bringing together CBS, Castaway Productions and Survivor Productions LLC. This update comes not long after Paramount closed its acquisition of Warner Bros. While there has been uncertainty over what this means for various projects at the two companies, especially since Skydance now owns multiple animation studios, executives are moving full steam ahead with their Survivor film. This is the very first time that Survivor is being adapted for the big screen. After starting as a reality show in Sweden called Expedition Robinson, the franchise has expanded globally, including in Australia, Serbia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Mexico and Spain. Producer Mark Burnett brought the series to the United States in the summer of 2000, and it quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. Richard Hatch won season 1 mere minutes after one of the most iconic moments in Survivor history, when jury member Sue Hawk delivered her infamous rat-and-snake speech. After that, Survivor spent years traveling all over the world, including Australia, Africa, Thailand, Guatemala, Panama, China, Nicaragua, the Philippines, and Cambodia. Production eventually settled down in Fiji, and the show has been filming there ever since. Tina Wesson, Ethan Zohn, Sandra Diaz-Twine, Amber Brkich, Yul Kwon, Parvati Shallow, Boston Rob and Tony Vlachos are some of the many Survivor castaways who have followed in Hatch's footsteps and outwitted, outplayed and outlasted everyone else to become the Sole Survivor and the winner of the $1 million grand prize. Survivor celebrated its 50th season earlier this year and brought back former players to compete against each other for the first time in 10 seasons. Aubry Bracco was announced as the winner, and she won $2 million after MrBeast chipped in an extra $1 million to the grand prize. The long-running reality competition show has evolved a lot over the years. Behind the scenes, Probst is now the showrunner. On camera, twists, advantages, and hidden idols have become the norm on Survivor. The currently airing Survivor 51 marks the start of the series' Open Era, with Probst saying players are in a state of "permanent uncertainty," where anything from Survivor's historycan be reintroduced at any point in the game. Survivor has evolved, but the franchise is now expanding with an upcoming animated film. Voice actors have not been announced yet, and a release date is not known at this time. Release Date May 31, 2000 Network CBS Writers Jeff Probst Survivor is a reality competition series set in remote locations where contestants, divided into tribes, must survive with minimal resources for approximately 39 days. Participants face physical challenges for rewards and immunity, with losing tribes attending Tribal Council to vote off a member.
