Diesel long dictated the roads, but electric heavy transport is taking charge. CATL unveiled its next-generation modular commercial vehicle battery platform, TECTRANS II, at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover. Rather than a basic cell update, the system is a adaptable modular architecture that integrates into existing vehicle lines. Truck manufacturers can achieve up to 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of range on a single charge, backed by megawatt-level fast charging that replenishes 80% capacity in 25 minutes. CATL rates the heavy-duty truck setup for a 12-year, 1.5-million-kilometer operating lifecycle while retaining 70 percent capacity. “Commercial vehicle electrification is emerging as the third wave of the global energy transition,” said Akin Li, Executive President of CATL Overseas Business. “Across products, energy, services and ecosystem, CATL is poised to work with partners around the world to catch this third wave.” 12 years of fleet duty Diesel engines offered endless range, rapid refueling, and standard parts that kept maintenance cheap. On the other hand, battery electric alternatives meant heavy, expensive packs that ate into cargo limits and spent hours anchored to slow chargers. That might finally be solved, thanks to CATL. TECTRANS II aims to simplify heavy vehicle electrification across diverse fleet operations. Its flexible modular design accommodates up to 1,000 kilometers of range and adapts easily to both charging and battery swapping. Manufacturers can standardize their chassis designs while upgrading battery chemistry over time. Notably, standardized components will help developers to cut vehicle design timelines in half and slash early development costs. As a result, commercial fleets lower upfront investments and maximize operational returns throughout the vehicle lifecycle. TECTRANS II boosts commercial vehicle profitability through lower upfront costs and higher daily operating returns. The battery delivers a gravimetric energy density of 170 Wh/kg, exceeding the industry average by 13% and increasing payload capacity by 0.6 tonnes. Maximum configurations support megawatt fast charging to hit 80 percent capacity in 25 minutes. Interestingly, a full-tab low-impedance design drives system round-trip efficiency up to 96 percent to limit energy waste. Ultra-durable TECTRANS II Durability, however, is where CATL hopes to truly bury diesel. Fleet managers don’t care about sleek aesthetics, but more about uptime and resale value. To prove the battery can handle harsh things, CATL designed a hot-formed steel cover capable of taking 10,000 steps from an 180-kilogram adult without deforming, paired with an armored bottom plate that withstands 1,000 Joules of road-debris impact. Inside it, independent multi-branch management systems mean that if a single battery line suffers a fault, it isolates automatically. And the rest of the pack continues delivering power, avoiding tow trucks and stranded cargo. It also comes with standard 15-year corrosion resistance that protects units against harsh coastal and winter road conditions. CATL signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DHL Group to establish Green Freight Corridors across Europe, building on their prior late-2024 partnership. Combining DHL’s extensive logistics network with CATL’s battery technology, the companies will collaborate with vehicle manufacturers to design purpose-built electric trucks and launch pilot deployments along key transit routes. “Commercial vehicle electrification will unfold over more than a decade,” said Zhu Lingbo, CTO of CATL Global Business Unit. With megawatt charging, standard modularity, and heavy haulage range finally in place, that decade-long shift looks less like a distant goal and more like an active rollout.
