Carl in the frame for Eva’s attack on Coronation Street as Debbie fears the worst

If Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) is accused of a crime – he definitely did it. Anything that involves lying, cheating, philandering, breaking hearts or blowing up lives, you name it, Carl’s done it. Not only did the Worst Webster do the dirty on his own uncle Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) by conducting a sordid affair with his wife Abi (Sally Carman), but he slept with James Bailey (Jason Callender) behind her back and ditched Abi once their relationship got too real. Pretty bad, right? Carl was just warming up. Time and again, he has tried to swindle, con and gaslight his own mother Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) out of her money and beloved business, the Chariot Square Hotel. Okay, at the time, he believed that she was his sister, but still, that’s no excuse. Especially seeing as Carl’s gift on his mother’s wedding day was causing the Corriedale crash that Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) died in, only to put poor Debs into the driving seat and use her dementia to make her think she did it. So utterly selfish is Carl that he was perfectly fine with his mother going to prison for a crime he committed. Let’s face it. Carl’s no angel (Picture: ITV) Eventually, Carl’s conniving ways and inherent selfishness cost him all of his nine lives with Debbie, who finally gave up on any hope of him ever turning over a new life and cast Carl out into the cold. However, ever since Carl had a car dropped on his head courtesy of Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), he’s been slightly less contemptible than usual. That isn’t to say that the Worst Webster doesn’t still get up to the occasional spot of mischief. Sadly, Carl’s shady record makes it more likely for the residents of Coronation Street to point the finger in his direction every time something bad happens… say for instance, the attack on Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley. When Eva is the victim of an assault in the rovers by a mystery assailant, Debbie is the one who finds her. As a fraught Ben (Aaron McCusker) keeps vigil at Eva’s hospital bedside, Kit (Jacob Roberts) questions Debbie and Carl about Eva’s injuries. Carl describes how he helped Eva to clear up because she wasn’t feeling well and then returned home. This raises alarm bells for Ronnie (Vinta Morgan) and Kevin, who know that Carl will do anything for cash. Therefore, they suspect he might accidentally pushed Eva down the stairs while robbing the pub. Will Debbie have faith in her son? Does Debbie believe that Carl is innocent?
