Brit tourist, 45, dead after jumping off ferry ‘to swim to beach bar’ alongside brother while on family holiday to Spain

The 45-year-old was travelling with his parents and 42-year-old brother when he reportedly threw himself from the window of the ferry. His brother followed him and survived, but the tourist’s body was found later that evening. The 45-year-old is the 14th victim to drown on the coast of Tarragona so far this summer. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Tragedy struck during the five-mile ferry trip from Cambrils, a popular resort on the Costa Dorada in Catalonia, to Salou. Local media reported a commotion in the port of Cambrils shortly before the last ferry boarded at 5.30pm on Friday. While on board, the two brothers, who appeared intoxicated, reportedly asked to drink alcohol, local media outlet Diari reports. But the ferry captain refused them drinks after being consulted by a sailor. They were just minutes away from docking in the port of Salou when the brothers plunged into the water. Shocked ferry passengers immediately alerted crew and maritime rescue teams were deployed to locate the two tourists. Most read in The Sun The parents of the two brothers remained on board the ferry and insisted their sons were good at swimming and could reach the beach. But only one of the brothers made it to shore. The boat docked in Salou and the brothers’ parents were detained at the marina for police to take statements. Their son’s body was identified later that evening at 9.52pm. Local police have launched a probe to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy. An autopsy is underway with the findings expected to confirm a cause of death. The incident was just one of two suspected drownings off the Spanish coast that day. Another British man, 75, had died just hours earlier after going for a swim in Lanzarote. The alarm was raised around 2.15pm on Wednesday in the popular resort of Puerto del Carmen, in the municipality of Tias. His wife alerted lifeguards that she had lost sight of her husband after he went into the sea near Jameos Hotel. A helicopter was deployed to scour the water and his body was eventually found. A Civil Guard investigation is ongoing today but no foul play is suspected. Comment now
