Brit boy, 5, dies after being pulled unconscious from hotel swimming pool in Lanzarote

A BRITISH boy has died in hospital after being pulled unconscious from a pool in Lanzarote. The five-year-old was airlifted to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest on Thursday afternoon. He was placed in intensive care – before passing away in hospital, it was revealed last night. It is not immediately clear when the child died. Emergency services raced to reports of a boy in critical condition at around 1pm on Thursday at an unamed hotel at the Playa Blanca resort. The young boy was pulled out of the pool “showing signs of drowning” according to the Canary Islands emergency response team. They said that multiple people – including the hotel lifeguard, a doctor and several bystanders – rushed to the aid of the child. “An advanced life support ambulance and another basic life support ambulance were also mobilised, as well as an air ambulance”, they added. His wife raised the alarm after she lost sight of her husband in the water, sparking a major search operation. Helicopters and firefighters scoured the beach – before finding the unnamed man’s body in the water. The Civil Guard have opened an investigation – but no foul play is suspected. Weeks earlier, on June 20, a four-year-old girl from the UK drowned in a hotel swimming pool in the same Lanzarote resort of Playa Blanca. The youngster died despite dramatic attempts to revive her at the unnamed hotel by medics. A total of 45 people have drowned in swimming pools and beaches in the Canary Islands from January to August this year, 15 per cent more than in the same period of 2025. Among them are six children, shows data compiled by the Association for the Prevention of Aquatic Accidents Canary Islands. Comment now
