Brian Fleury embraces his first opportunity as an offensive coordinator

Published September 6, 2026 09:11 PM Brian Fleury’s moment has arrived.After more than 20 years of coaching at the college and pro level, Fleury will soon embark on his biggest job yet — offensive coordinator of an NFL franchise. And not just any franchise. He’s running the offense for the Seattle Seahawks.“I didn’t think that grandly,” Fleury told reporters on Sunday regarding his career goals. “As a kid, I always wanted to be a part of the National Football League, so that part of it has always been there. I’ve always had a lot of respect and admiration for the people that play football in this league and the people that have helped build it from the ground up, but it was really more about teaching for me early on, like taking what I knew from the knowledge standpoint and being able to help people get better.”But it can be a lonely existence, when it comes to seeking input from others. Said Fleury on that subject, “Unfortunately, the people I would seek advice from aren’t interested in seeing us do well, so not many.”That’s a direct byproduct of Fleury taking the Seattle job after seven seasons as an assistant coach on Kyle Shanahan’s staff in San Francisco. Fleury arrived as a low-level defensive quality control coach before flipping to the offensive side of the ball the next year. From there, he was promoted to tight ends coach before adding in 2025 the title of run game coordinator. He’s now stepping into the shoes of Klint Kubiak, who did enough in one year in the position to become a head coach.It increases the degree of difficult for Fleury, especially since head coach Mike Macdonald is a defensive specialist. Fleury’s preferred system may yield in large part to the things the Seahawks did well enough in 2025 to win a Super Bowl.Last year, for example, the promotion of John Morton to replace Bears coach Ben Johnson as the Lions’ offensive coordinator didn’t go well — and Morton had been in the building. Fleury is a newcomer to an offense that wasn’t broken.And so while it’s a great opportunity for Fleury to take the next step, it’s also a high wire. One false move, and his first year as an offensive coordinator could be his last, for now or possibly for good.Regardless, Fleury is embracing the moment.“I’m looking forward to it,” Fleury said. “I’ve had more fun out here at practice these last two days than any of the last seven years, so I’m excited to continue this journey and get out there for the first time on Wednesday.”When he does, he’ll watch his former employer’s arch rival hang a banner, minutes before Fleury is charged with the task of leading the offense to another one.
