Brandon Sanderson Just Previewed More MTG Cards As Fans Call For Universes Beyond Set

I've made no secret of the fact that I believe a Magic: The Gathering set based on Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere universe would be a huge hit. I even wrote about it in my Universes Beyond wishlist earlier this year. It's a deep fantasy universe with complex characters and incredible world-building, making it a perfect match for an MTG crossover set. Thanks to a new Reality Fracture preview revealed by author Brandon Sanderson, rumors of an eventual Cosmere Universes Beyond set are red-hot. Still, it's hard to see this as anything other than wishful thinking from fans. MTG Fan Brandon Sanderson Reveals New Reality Fracture Cards Brandon Sanderson, author of Mistborn, The Way of Kings, Oathbringer, Tress of the Emerald Sea, and many, many other high fantasy books, revealed two new Gallia cards for Reality Fracture. This is a continuation of the Gallia card he previewed for Theros Beyond Death six years ago. This is also notable because, while it's well known that Sanderson is a fan of Magic: The Gathering, the fan demand for a Cosmere Universes Beyond set has really picked up in 2026. Whether it's because the excellent books are reaching more players, the upcoming film adaptations for Apple TV are picking up steam, or just because of the comparisons to how well the Lord of the Rings property translated to Magic, fans want a Cosmere Magic set, and I'm fully on board with the idea, too. However, despite Sanderson being chosen to reveal cards for the new Reality Fracture set, this can't be taken as a sign that something is in the works. One reason to cling to hope, though, is the fact that we know that Wizards of the Coast is working on sets that aren't due to release until 2029 and 2030 right now, so putting Sanderson front and center and letting the fans call for a Cosmere set could pay off if they are planning to work on something together soon; we'll just have to wait a good few years for it to reach the market. Is Cosmere Too Niche For Universes Beyond? While we've seen a ton of players calling for a Cosmere x MTG crossover, everything needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt. Just like the loudest voices opposing Universes Beyond apparently only represent less than 7% of the playing community, those in favor of a Cosmere crossover could be equally small, but they just happen to be active online. The truth is, even with 50 million books sold as of 2025, the Cosmere universe might still be considered too niche for a Universes Beyond crossover because of its lack of presence in other media. Once the first film is out, if it is a success, there may be a stronger argument for it to make the jump to the iconic TCG, but even as a huge fan of the Mistborn series, I just couldn't justify a full MTG set for it right now for fear of it being a flop due to its popularity. Marvel, Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, and even Avatar seemed like much safer bets.
