Bosnia’s 2026 Elections: Fewer Votes, Familiar Winners

The biggest, if not the only, real novelty in Bosnia’s October 4 election was that the first preliminary results were announced on election night, before all the polling stations had even closed. For a country with such a complex administrative system as Bosnia and Herzegovina, this came as a major surprise. It was welcomed by most politicians, media and ordinary people alike, who formerly had to wait days or weeks before the Central Election Commission, CEC, announced the preliminary results in all the key races. However, for many Bosnians, the excitement generated by this technical novelty was quickly replaced with disdain on hearing the actual results. As soon as the CEC officials started listing them, they revealed the continued domination of Bosnia’s main Serb and Croat ethnic parties, as well as a major comeback by their Bosniak counterpart.
