Bitcoin falls below $79,000: 3 reasons why crypto prices are dropping

Bitcoin investors are having a difficult time as the world's biggest cryptocurrency slips below the $79,000 mark, dragging several major digital tokens lower. Ethereum has taken a sharper hit, while XRP, Solana, Cardano and other altcoins have also turned red. But what is driving the sell-off, and could prices fall further? At 12.30 pm on Friday, October 30, Bitcoin was trading at $78,396.39, down 1.79% over the past 24 hours. Its closest rival, Ethereum, was down 6.44%. The losses extended to other major cryptocurrencies, with XRP, Solana, Chainlink, Cardano and Avalanche declining by 2.26%, 1.80%, 2.36%, 1.87% and 0.68%, respectively. Elon Musk's favourite cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, was also down 1.98% over the same period. The fall comes amid concerns over a reported $6.3 billion security incident involving Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, along with broader economic worries and heavy selling in the crypto market. Here are three reasons why Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are falling today.BINANCE SECURITY INCIDENT RATTLES INVESTORSA suspected cyber heist targeting Binance has raised fresh concerns about the safety of funds held on cryptocurrency exchanges. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), hackers made off with an estimated $6.3 billion in what could rank as the biggest cryptocurrency theft ever. However, Binance has not explicitly confirmed that $6.3 billion was stolen. In an official update published on October 30, the exchange described the figure as the estimated financial impact of the security incident. It also said that around $3 billion worth of affected assets had been frozen on-chain.The development has added to uncertainty in an already weak cryptocurrency market, with investors becoming more cautious about exchange-related risks and the security of digital assets.HEAVY SELLING AND LIQUIDATIONS PUT PRESSURE ON BITCOINAnother major reason behind Bitcoin's decline is the sharp rise in selling pressure and liquidations in the derivatives market. When cryptocurrency prices fall quickly, traders who have borrowed money or taken leveraged positions can be forced to close their trades. This can lead to further selling, pushing prices down even more.Avinash Shekhar, Co-Founder and CEO of Pi42, said Bitcoin slipped below $79,000 amid heightened selling pressure and a broader decline in cryptocurrency prices."The correction was further intensified by significant liquidations, particularly in long positions, reflecting cautious investor sentiment," he said.He added that major cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum, XRP and Solana, also faced selling pressure, although institutional interest and developments across the digital asset ecosystem remain important drivers of longer-term market sentiment.According to Shekhar, Bitcoin's ability to hold the $79,000–$80,000 range will be important in the near term. A sustained recovery above $80,000 could help restore investor confidence.INFLATION WORRIES, WEAKER GLOBAL MARKETS WEIGH ON CRYPTOBroader economic concerns are also adding to the pressure on cryptocurrencies.Persistent inflation, expensive energy and weakness in global equity markets have made investors more cautious about taking risks. This has affected demand for volatile assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.Nischal Shetty, Founder of WazirX, said Bitcoin and Ethereum tested important long-term levels as persistent inflation, high energy costs and weaker global equities reduced market participation. He also pointed to mixed trends in institutional investment. While US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) attracted $137.3 million, led by BlackRock's IBIT, Ethereum ETFs recorded outflows of $21.4 million."Bitcoin's decline despite fresh ETF demand shows that fund allocations cannot independently determine price direction. Derivatives liquidations, profit-taking, exchange supply and wider macro pressure can temporarily outweigh institutional buying before its impact appears in spot markets," Shetty said. This suggests that even when institutional investors continue to put money into Bitcoin, other factors can drive prices lower in the short term. What should Bitcoin investors watch now? With Bitcoin trading below $79,000, the next few sessions could be important in determining whether the cryptocurrency stabilises or sees another round of selling.Shekhar said Bitcoin's ability to hold the $79,000–$80,000 range will be crucial. A sustained move above $80,000 could help improve market sentiment. He advised investors against making impulsive decisions during sharp price movements."Investors should avoid impulsive decisions during sharp price movements, maintain disciplined position sizing and closely monitor institutional flows, macroeconomic developments and broader market trends before taking fresh positions," he said. For now, the combination of exchange-related concerns, derivatives liquidations and wider economic uncertainty is keeping cryptocurrency investors on edge. Whether Bitcoin can recover will depend on how these factors play out in the coming sessions.(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group.
