Binman warns you’ll ‘get maggots for DAYS’ if you dump everyday item in wheelie bin

UK households have been warned to keep a common item out of their wheelie bins or risk a maggot infestation. A binman has shared the worst offender for attracting the pests to your rubbish. Lured by decomposing food, rubbish, and dampness, maggots tend to set up shop in your bins, with pet food in particular drawing them in. Binman Ashley, who posts tips on his No.1 Binman account, explained that the odour and dampness of leftover pet food creates the perfect storm for maggots. “As long as it is only the food. The packaging itself can’t be recycled, and it wouldn’t go with it in the food waste bin,” he explained. “It wouldn’t go in the recycling if it is a pouch; it would go in the general waste bin.” Ashley continued: “Your council may be different, do check. But most councils will let you put your dog or cat food waste in the food waste bin.” Flies often deposit their eggs onto pet food that has been left out in bowls. Most read in The Sun These eggs can then transfer into your bin along with the food, causing maggots to emerge and rapidly multiply. “Make sure you put it in a bag before you put it in, because that will stink,” the binman advised. “You will get maggots for days. So, bag it up and put it in a compostable bag and in your food waste bin.” He added: “Make sure you put it out every single week, otherwise you will get the maggots and the smells.
