When it comes to the future of the Fallout franchise, it is certainly not cut and dry. It has been over a decade since the last mainline Fallout entry, Fallout 4, was released, and despite Fallout 76 keeping fans entertained in the meantime, the wait for Fallout 5 is ongoing. Despite being first teased as way back as 2022, it was only in July 2026 that Bethesda finally confirmed that it was in development. However, with the next Fallout entry not expected to launch until the arrival of The Elder Scrolls VI, therein lies the problem. Mainly because fans have no idea when TES VI will actually arrive, with no release window, trailer, or major update. Bethesda Game Studios As such, it is unlikely that Fallout 5 will be released until 2030 at the earliest, and even that is wishful thinking at the time of writing. However, in an attempt to satiate fans, Bethesda has released an update on the future of the Fallout franchise, including Fallout 5 as well as the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remakes and the brand-new standalone Fallout entry that is reportedly in development by Obsidian Entertainment. That being said, Xbox's recent changes when it comes to restructuring its workforce not only mean that many developers have lost their jobs, but that development on these upcoming Fallout entries may also be affected. Now that Bethesda will be overseeing Obsidian's development of the untitled Fallout entry, the studio has assured fans that it will not influence Obsidian's creative identity and leadership will not be affected. According to a memo acquired by Aftermath, Bethesda has assured Obsidian workers that any changes will be "primarily a change in reporting structure", according to Bethesda president Jill Braff. As such, Obsidian's current CEO, Feargus Urquhart, will continue to lead the Obsidian team, with the only change being that he will now have to report directly to Bethesda. "The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work. "Feargus and the Obsidian leadership team will continue to lead Obsidian, with the studio reporting to me. "Bethesda Game Studios will continue to lead the Fallout franchise. Together, the teams will build on their longstanding relationship and the early work already underway on a new Fallout project, with more to share in the months ahead. "This structure supports the franchise-led model we've been strengthening while keeping accountability for both the studio and the franchise clear." The good news here is, despite the recent merger, the ongoing Fallout projects will seemingly not be affected. However, this still does not shine any light on when we can expect the launch of Fallout 5, the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters, or the brand-new untitled game. Hey, it is better than a cancellation, right?
