Belarus Summons Ukraine Envoy Over Alleged Bryansk Drone Strike

Belarus summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Minsk on Friday, Oct. 9, accusing Ukrainian forces of deliberately targeting a Belarusian-registered civilian truck in Russia’s Bryansk region, Belarusian state media reported. Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ruslan Varankov stated that a drone struck the commercial vehicle on Oct. 8 while it was operating inside the Russian border province.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. According to state news agency BelTA, the explosion severely injured a Belarusian citizen, who was hospitalized and underwent emergency surgery resulting in amputations. Varankov claimed that the vehicle’s national markings were clearly identifiable, asserting that Minsk regarded the incident as an intentional act and warning that Belarus reserved the right to take “adequate response measures.” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (MFA) rejected the allegations, lodging an official diplomatic protest over the summons and warning Minsk against weaponizing the incident to heighten regional instability. “We consider it groundless to assign responsibility to Ukraine without the presentation of convincing evidence of involvement,” Ukrainian MFA spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said in a statement. “We reject such absurd accusations from a country that is an accomplice to the crime of aggression against Ukraine and provides extensive assistance to Russia in its criminal war of conquest against our state.” Other Topics of Interest Ukraine Vows to Keep Striking Russian Refineries Despite Trump Deal – FT A senior official told the FT “we will burn [Russia’s] refineries” as analysts question whether Moscow can supply US diesel with 40% capacity idled. Tykhyi emphasized that Minsk’s claims were paired with rhetoric alleging deliberate attempts to draw Belarus into hostilities alongside threats of retaliation. “We condemn attempts to shift responsibility for the consequences of Russian aggression, to project Ukraine as a source of threats to Belarus, and to intentionally stoke tension in the region,” Tykhyi said. “We call on the Belarusian side to refrain from baseless accusations, threats, and information manipulation. We consider it unacceptable to use this incident to justify further Belarusian support for Russian aggression or to create additional threats against Ukraine.” Lukashenko’s ‘co-aggressor’ alignment with Moscow The diplomatic clash follows remarks delivered by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko on Oct. 2, in which he reaffirmed Minsk’s absolute alignment with the Kremlin. Speaking in Minsk during a meeting with heads of delegations attending the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, Lukashenko openly referred to himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin as “co-aggressors” in the war against Ukraine. “In the end, we are ‘co-aggressors’ with him. We have one question, which we sometimes discuss jokingly: who is more of an ‘aggressor’ – me or him?” Lukashenko stated, according to BelTA. While acknowledging differences in tactical perspectives, Lukashenko insisted that Belarus would remain unconditionally loyal to the Kremlin’s strategic direction. “I have my own understanding of individual aspects of the conflict in Ukraine, but we will always be committed to our common course,” Lukashenko told delegates. “If you, the leadership of Russia, make a decision, we will always be with you, despite our particular understanding of what is happening there. We have never been traitors.” The Belarusian leader also reiterated his long-standing commitment to prevent hostile action against Moscow from the west, defining the Union State of Russia and Belarus as an integrated security perimeter extending “from Brest to Vladivostok.” Kyiv Post is Ukraine’s first and oldest English news organization, reporting since 1995.
