At least 8 dead, 20,000 homes in darkness: What's fuelling Japan's deadly rain?

Japan is grappling with an extraordinary spell of rain that has turned parts of Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo, into a flood zone.The deluge has killed at least eight people, according to news agency Reuters, disrupted rail and road links, cut power and left thousands stranded, including travellers at Narita International Airport.The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest-level heavy-rain warning for parts of Chiba as the downpour intensified. Chiba city recorded 115 mm in one hour, while Sakura received 97 mm in an hour.Chiba city also recorded about 367 mm in 24 hours, exceeding its previous 24-hour record of 309 mm set in October 2013. It does not, however, mean Japan has recorded its highest rainfall ever.The country has experienced much larger rainfall totals during past major events, including the widespread August 2021 heavy-rain disaster.WHAT CREATED SUCH A RAINFALL EXTREME?The immediate trigger behind this record-breaking spell of rain was an atmosphere loaded with warm, moisture-rich air, which created conditions favourable for powerful rain clouds to repeatedly develop over the same area.When very moist air rises into an unstable atmosphere, it can fuel intense thunderstorms. (Photo: Reuters) If the rain-producing clouds repeatedly form or remain concentrated over one location, rainfall can accumulate extraordinarily quickly.That appears to have happened over Chiba, turning a burst of severe thunderstorms into a prolonged rainfall event.The concentration of rain over a relatively small area meant water rapidly overwhelmed drainage systems, roads and rivers.WHY DID THE RAIN TURN DEADLY IN JAPAN?The sheer volume and speed of the rainfall left little time for water to drain away. (Photo: Reuters) Floodwater entered homes and submerged vehicles, while roads and railway tracks became impassable.Around 7,000 travellers were stranded at Narita Airport, while more than 20,000 homes lost power after flooding affected a power substation.
