As electric semi truck race heats up, SoCal is getting another charging hub

As record-breaking diesel prices drive demand for electric big rigs, so, too is the demand for commercial truck charging climbing. To meet that demand, EV Realty as announced a new, Inland Empire site for its next electric semi truck charging hub. With companies like BYD and Volvo about to roll out their third generation electric trucks and the Tesla Semi allegedly in production after nearly a decade of waiting, it seems like American fleets are starting to understand what the rest of the world has already figured out: predictable fuel costs means predictable operating budgets, and predictable budgets means less volatile consumer pricing and a happier, less guillotine-y populace. To that end, fleets are buying EVs in record numbers – much to the dismay of that News Corp/Fox-owned rag, the Wall Street Journal, who are so desperate to spread that narrative that they’ve published essentially the same article under different bylines several times. (lol) Keeping those fleets topped off with electric fuel is going to be the challenge now, and a number of companies are stepping up with commercial charging hubs designed with broad turning areas, easy highway access, and trailer-friendly pull-through designs built specifically to meet the needs of big rig drivers. The latest new site, acquired this week by EV Realty, is set to located at 2151 E. Philadelphia Street in what the company calls, “the West Coast’s largest and most concentrated warehousing submarket,” making it an ideal site to service local freight and logistics operations. The property has excellent access to the east-west SR-60 and north-south I-15 freeways and is well-positioned to provide charging for fleets serving the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as the intermodal facilities in Los Angeles and San Bernardino, and is located just three miles from Ontario International Airport – one of the top 10 cargo airports in the country and home to major air freight operations for companies like UPS and FedEx. Location, location, location The blue space is theirs, presumably. “Ontario sits at the convergence of the nation’s largest container gateway and the densest warehouse cluster in North America. This part of Southern California is among the most important freight hubs in the world and is the epicenter of truck electrification for this country,” said EV Realty CEO Patrick Sullivan. “When this site comes online, EV Realty will have 27 MW of simultaneous truck charging capacity between the ports and the Inland Empire. This is how we start to see real scale – finding power in the right locations and building infrastructure to meet growing demand.” Grid capacity in general in Southern California is severely constrained in many areas, a fact that EV Realty believes underscores the value of this high-capacity site for fleet operators that need power in the region The company expects construction at the site to being early next year, with chargers coming online before 2028.
