Army veteran and midwife killed after plane crashes in Brit holiday hotspot – as probe launched into tragedy

AN army veteran and a midwife have been killed after their biplane crashed in a Brit holiday hotspot. The aircraft crashed on Sunday morning in La Londe-les-Maures, a popular spot nestled between Marseille and Saint-Tropez in the south of France. Retired air force general Patrick Feron was at the controls when the plane went down, according to local officials. The biplane had taken off from Cuers airfield in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region before crashing in the commune around 20 kilometres further south, according to French newspaper Le Figaro. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Feron died alongside his passenger, who has been named in reports as a senior midwife at the Fréjus Saint-Raphaël hospital. Feron served as the vice-president of Les Ailes de la Reconnaissance, a local association for aviation enthusiasts. The charitable association – which means ‘Wings of Recognition’ in English – provides introductory flights to healthcare workers to thank them for their dedicated service. Authorities confirmed that the cause of the tragic crash remains undetermined as investigations continue. The association’s president, Daniel Muraro, told French outlet La Depeche: “The plane was in perfect condition, there was fuel, the weather was perfect. “He (the pilot, editor’s note) had flown it the day before. Everything was going very well. Most read in The Sun “Then he took off and didn’t come back.” Muraro claimed to the newspaper that the accident occurred after approximately 15 minutes of flight. Only one fire engine from the Var fire department was involved, according to France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
