‘An absolute hero’: Police officer gives chase after being stabbed in neck

September 27, 2026 — 11:19amA newly graduated Queensland police officer is recovering in hospital after being stabbed in the neck and torso during a callout at a home east of Brisbane on Sunday morning.Officers were called to a residential address on Bogong Street in Hemmant about 5.15am following reports of a disturbance between a father and son.Police engaged with the two men before one allegedly attacked an officer, stabbing him in the neck and torso.Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior confirmed the officer was a recent graduate of the police academy. Courtney KrukAnother officer was “slashed across the forehead”, according to the Queensland Police Union.One of the two men then fled on a bike, before dumping it and continuing on foot. He was eventually found and taken into custody about 7am.Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior said the injured officer gave chase and deployed his taser “whilst holding on to his neck to stop the bleeding”.He stopped out of concern about his injury.“In my books, he’s an absolute hero,” Prior said.The officer was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.Prior said the weapon used was not believed to be a knife but an “implement”.He said the officer – a man in his 40s who previously worked for the Australian Red Cross – was only 10 weeks into the job after graduating from the police academy in July.“We may very well have been talking about a scenario where an officer was killed today just doing their job,” Prior said.Police said investigations are continuing.Start the day with a summary of the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.
