American Airlines is adding a way to get a better seat without constantly refreshing the seat map. Tell the app what you want, and it’ll move you automatically if a matching seat opens up. Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members are also getting a way to reserve their complimentary coach snack before flying, instead of hoping their choice is still available when the cart reaches them. These are substantial improvements. An aisle instead of a middle seat can change the whole flight. And a benefit that promises you a complimentary snack is worth a lot more when you can actually count on getting it. As aviation watchdog JonNYC reports, AAdvantage members traveling solo will be able to set a seat preference and have American move them when a matching seat becomes available. The feature appears under “Trip options” as “Automatic seat change.” AA: Auto-seat change, AADV members traveling solo can set a seat type preference and they’ll auto change your seat if a matching seat becomes available. — JonNYC (@xJonNYC) September 23, 2026 The screenshots show choices for aisle, middle and window, along with options for seats closer to the front and bulkheads. You’re asking for a type of seat, rather than waitlisting for a specific seat number. Here’s how the app says it’ll work: Moves stay within your current cabin and won’t require an additional charge. Exit rows are excluded. Requests are prioritized by AAdvantage status, then by the time you signed up. Once American finds you a seat, automatic changes turn off. They also turn off if you change your seat manually. You can switch the feature on or off yourself. Automatic seat changes stop 24 hours before departure. So you’ll want to request only seat types you’d actually want, and if you make a manual change but still want American looking for something better, add the setting again. The 24-hour cutoff is the biggest limitation. Seats can open up close to departure as upgrades clear and passengers change flights, and when upgrades do clear that tends to be pretty close to departure. Although people taking buy up offers will open seats, too. You’ll still want to look yourself during that final lead-up to travel. Gold members, in particular, should still plan to check for Main Cabin Extra themselves. Their complimentary access on eligible tickets starts within 24 hours of departure, just when this automated feature stops. The screenshots also don’t spell out how the system treats Main Cabin Extra versus regular coach, including whether it will preserve extra legroom when matching another preference. United introduced automatic seat preferences in March 2024. Its launch version included exit rows and monitored availability until 12 hours before departure. By July 2024, United reported that more than 30% of customers who’d saved a preference were moved to their preferred seat. So American is catching up to a useful feature. Top Elites Will Be Able To Reserve Their Coach Food Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members will be able to preorder their complimentary Main Cabin snack. The screenshot shows an Executive Platinum benefit under Trip options, with a deadline of 20 hours before departure. NEW: 2 new exciting features are coming to the @AmericanAir mobile app! First, automatic seat changes — if a different seat you want opens up, AA will automatically move you and let you know based on the parameters you set. Second, if you’re an EP or CK and entitled to a complimentary snack in the Main Cabin, you can now pre-order that to ensure you get your preferred snack onboard! — Jamie Larounis (@TheForwardCabin) September 23, 2026 This is the food item from the buy on board menu that those members already receive free. American sells food on flights over 1,100 miles. All coach passengers used to be able to preorder food for purchase. I first wrote about their coach preorder trial in January 2018, covering Dallas – Fort Worth flights to New York LaGuardia, Philadelphia and Seattle. Passengers could reserve food until 24 hours before departure without paying in advance. The feature was still available up until the pandemic. When your upgrade doesn’t clear, having food reserved in coach is really nice. I enjoy a complimentary snack in back, but there’s always a bit of stress around whether there will be any available by the time flight attendants reach your row. While there will certainly be miscaters, or crew who fail to save reserved items, this is a real benefit delivery improvement for top elites. American’s partner Alaska lets coach passengers preorder food through its app or website, from two weeks until 20 hours before departure. What I’d love to see is American restore that option for everyone buying food, too. And I’d want to see American reduce the distance threshold for offering it, and extend food for sale to long regional flights as well. Topics on this page
