Alternative fuels overtake petrol in India's passenger vehicle market for the first time

(Photo: PTI/File)India’s passenger vehicle market has reached a historic inflection point, with alternative fuel-powered vehicles collectively outselling petrol-powered vehicles for the first time. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), CNG, hybrids and electric vehicles accounted for 41.95% of passenger vehicle retail sales in August 2026, compared with 40.85% for petrol/ethanol-powered vehicles. The shift marks a dramatic change in the country’s passenger vehicle fuel mix. Just a year ago, petrol/ethanol held a lead of nearly 11 percentage points over alternative powertrains. In August 2025, consumers were still overwhelmingly inclined towards conventional petrol-powered vehicles, but the gap has now been completely erased, with alternative fuels moving ahead for the first time.CNG remains the biggest alternative-fuel choiceCNG was the largest contributor to the crossover, accounting for 25.28% of passenger vehicle retail sales in August. Hybrid vehicles contributed around 9%, while electric vehicles accounted for 7.63%.Taken together, these three powertrains accounted for 41.95% of PV retail sales. Petrol/ethanol, meanwhile, stood at 40.85%, with diesel accounting for another 17.21%. While petrol remains the single-largest fuel type, its dominance is increasingly being challenged by a combination of powertrains rather than one direct competitor. The growing preference for CNG, hybrids and EVs reflects a combination of factors, including lower running costs, increasing availability of alternative powertrains and changing consumer sentiment around petrol vehicles. FADA dealers have also pointed to consumer hesitation surrounding the E20 transition as one factor encouraging buyers to consider alternatives. The numbers point to a structural shift The crossover comes against the backdrop of a strong August for India's passenger vehicle market. PV retail sales rose 16.14% year-on-year to 4,02,398 units, making it the best-ever August for the segment and the first time August sales crossed the four-lakh mark. However, the shift towards alternative powertrains is arguably more significant than the overall sales growth. The combined share of CNG, hybrids and EVs has now moved beyond the share of petrol/ethanol, signalling that India's transition away from conventional petrol is no longer confined to a niche group of EV buyers.Electric vehicles alone accounted for 7.63% of PV retail sales in August, while total EV retail sales across vehicle categories reached a record 2,98,448 units, up 52.9% year-on-year.Rural India is accelerating the transitionThe changing fuel mix is also unfolding alongside a broader shift in where India's vehicle demand is coming from. Rural passenger vehicle retail sales grew 24.99% year-on-year in August, significantly faster than the 10.93% growth recorded in urban markets. This suggests that the move towards alternative powertrains is increasingly spreading beyond India's major cities. CNG's lower running costs, hybrid efficiency and the growing availability of EVs are making alternative powertrains relevant to a much broader customer base. The trend is particularly notable because it comes despite a challenging monsoon environment. While tractor demand remained virtually flat, other rural vehicle categories continued to record strong growth, pointing to a broader expansion of consumption beyond farm-linked demand.Petrol is losing ground, but the transition is not completeThe August numbers do not mean that petrol cars have suddenly become a minority choice. Petrol/ethanol remains the largest individual fuel category at 40.85%, while CNG alone trails it at 25.28%.What has changed is the combined weight of alternatives. Buyers are increasingly spreading their preference across CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles, collectively creating a powertrain bloc larger than petrol. The development therefore represents less of a sudden collapse in petrol demand and more of a gradual diversification of India's passenger vehicle market.FADA President Sai Giridhar also cautioned against reading too much into the year-on-year growth numbers, noting that August 2025 was a relatively soft base as buyers had deferred purchases ahead of the GST 2.0 rate cut. The festive season will provide a clearer indication of whether the changing fuel mix and strong retail momentum can be sustained. For now, however, the August data marks a clear milestone: for the first time in India's automotive history, alternative fuels have collectively overtaken petrol in the passenger vehicle market.Subscribe to Auto Today Magazine - EndsPublished On: Sep 8, 2026 12:33 IST
