Alleged sexual touching left complainant 'squirming', Jones trial hears

A former colleague of broadcaster Alan Jones has broken down in tears while describing an alleged unwanted kiss from the radio host, telling the court he "had to cop" Mr Jones's alleged assaults because of the power dynamic.The man, known as Complainant C, is accusing Mr Jones of indecently assaulting him on eight different occasions when the pair worked together in 2008, including allegedly kissing him in a lift and touching his groin in the car.Mr Jones has pleaded not guilty to 22 charges of indecent assault and sexual touching, relating to six complainants, and is on trial in the NSW Local Court.In Complainant C's first day of giving evidence, he said he was 18 when he first met Mr Jones, and described it as "big deal" for someone who wanted to work in media, and whose family were avid listeners of Mr Jones."To be able to say I worked with Alan Jones was pretty much as good as it gets for a young kid," he said.Complainant C then went on to say Mr Jones could be "berating" at work if things were not done to his liking, and the complainant would at times "cop a spray" from the radio host.Complainant C accuses Mr Jones of indecently assaulting him on eight different occasions. (ABC News: Jamie McKinnell)After a trip to Mr Jones's Fitzroy Falls property in the NSW Southern Highlands, Complainant C said their relationship shifted to being more about "banter" and "jokey"."The dynamic had shifted a little bit, like I'd got through the period of getting torn strips off in the office and now I was sort of looked after by him," he said.Complainant C told the court Mr Jones began to send him complimentary and "romantic" texts where Mr Jones would say "big hugs and big kisses"."Like being bombarded with love … love bombing," he told the court."We weren't in love."He said the messages became "sexually explicit", referring to his penis in a specific way, and asking about its size.Complainant C said he responded to the messages, but not in a sexually explicit way, to "keep him on side"."Imagine if he sent that stuff to me and I didn't respond … it would not have been pleasant."I would write things like, 'Love you too mate, miss you too.'"I'd seen others write messages to him in that way."They were people who he was protective of, so I thought I needed to write in that way."He alleges Mr Jones once asked him, "You're deleting these messages, aren't you?"Mr Jones denies the allegations. (ABC News: Jamie McKinnell)Complainant C then described the alleged offending as starting in a car, when the young man was driving Mr Jones to his apartment.He said on several occasions Mr Jones would put his hand on his leg, and then one day moved his hand up his leg, to his groin area, outside his trousers."Did you do anything?" Crown prosecutor Georgina Wright SC asked."No, apart from maybe squirming," Complainant C replied."My hands were on the steering wheel, I was driving. I was pretty frozen."Power dynamics at playComplainant C said he felt "violated" and that he had never been touched like that by a man before, because he was not gay, and was in a relationship with a woman at the time.He described several more occasions where Mr Jones allegedly touched him on the genitals or groin outside of his trousers, while they were both in the car."I was scared," he said."My boss' hand was on my penis.On another occasion, Complainant C said he was in a lift with Mr Jones at his Macquarie Street residence when he said Mr Jones approached him and kissed him.The witness began to cry as he told the court he tried to move his head down and to the side, and said "no no no".Asked by the Crown if he ever told Mr Jones he did not like the behaviour, or to stop, Complainant C said he could not do that."You couldn't say, 'Stop it I don't like it,' it didn't work like that," he said."The power dynamic was extraordinary."The man described several allegations of kissing, which he said was unwanted.Mr Jones's defence is that none of the allegations made by any of the six men ever happened.
