James Gunn's DC Universe currently stands as the main franchise when it comes to DC Studios. In 2026, Supergirl, the Milly Alcock movie that ended up disappointing at the box office, was the first of those. Thankfully, DC has quickly followed that with Lanterns, an HBO series that is doing wonders to the Green Lantern Corps' live-action legacy. That is the only show to come from the DCU in 2026, a year when we also will not see any other releases from Matt Reeves' The Batman franchise. That universe led to one of the best DC TV shows: HBO's The Penguin. That said, DC continues to work on Elseworlds projects, aka franchises and standalone releases that are not part of the canon of Gunn's DCU. Recently, Prime Video released Batman: Caped Crusader season 2, which is a great example of what these DC shows can accomplish, as they are not bound by larger universe constraints. My Adventures with Superman season 3 did the same. Now, HBO Max's slate of releases in September comes with many exciting announcements for DC fans. Four DC shows will return with new episodes on the streaming service. This includes major heroes like Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and more. While animation does dominate the slate of upcoming DC releases on HBO Max, there is a major live-action series that will also continue to thrive. 4 Krypto Saves the Day Season 2A - September 10 Krypto Saves the Day season 2A will be released on HBO Max on September 10. The animated series of shorts has Gunn as an executive producer and was developed as a follow-up to his Superman movie. While it is not set in the DCU, which Gunn has already confirmed, the Superman spinoff series was clearly inspired by Krypto's design in the 2025 DC movie and the super-powered dog's penchant for causing chaos. Four episodes of Krypto Saves the Day have been released thus far, with its latest being "Coastal Catastrophe," which was released on HBO Max on April 18. These shorts are perfect for young viewers and fans in general who enjoyed the hilarious dynamic between Superman and Krypto, as the Man of Steel appears, though in a non-speaking role. 3 Batwheels Season 3E - September 19 Batwheels season 3E will glide onto HBO Max on September 19. The animated Batman series brings to life one of the biggest pieces of "What If?" DC casting, as Ethan Hawke voices Batman in the show. While the show has a comedic feel to it, Hawke's performance as Bruce Wayne always remains true to the character's stoic nature. Batwheels, as its name suggests, might feature Batman, but the Bat-Family's vehicles are the animated series' true stars. Think Cars with a superhero edge. Batwheels season 3 has already brought in other DC heroes like Aquaman, Zatanna, and The Flash, so it will be interesting to see who else pops up. 2 Teen Titans Go! Season 9H - September 20 Teen Titans Go! Season 9H will drop on HBO Max on September 20. The project has become one of DC's longest-running series, already taking the crown when it comes to animated shows. That speaks to how fans can continue to expect plenty of hilarious adventures in this vibrant and comedic take on the Teen Titans, one of DC's most popular teams. Teen Titans Go! Season 9 continues the stories of Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and Cyborg, who have come to develop one of the most charming connections between heroes in the history of DC adaptations. Other DC characters, such as Aqualad, Brother Blood, Captain Cold, The Joker, The Flash, Black Canary, and more have appeared in season 9. 1 Lanterns (New Episodes) Finally, four episodes of Lanterns will be released on HBO and HBO Max from September 6 to September 27.
