The Captain America mantle has changed hands many times throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Avengers: Doomsday uniting all three men to hold the title for the first time. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) was the one and only Captain America for the first 11 years of the MCU, but Avengers: Endgame's ending saw him pass the shield and responsibility to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). While that is the title he's fully embraced by the time Avengers: Doomsday rolls around, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw him reject it initially, allowing John Walker (Wyatt Russell) to become Steve's successor for a short time, until he murdered someone with the iconic red, white, and blue shield. With Steve back in the fold for Doomsday, questions have swirled about who Captain America is and how Sam and Steve's dynamic will be upon his return. Marvel has confirmed the movie will address this directly, albeit in a joking manner, with a new Doomsday trailer including a bit where Ant-Man calls Steve "Cap" and then corrects himself to address Sam as "Cap," before John butts in to remind everyone he was also Captain America "for a minute." Steve, Sam, and John may all have been Captain America before, but Sam is the MCU's official Captain America in Doomsday. Together, the three "Captains America" (as Ant-Man calls them) possess a great amount of power, yet their individual power scale is quite varied, with one clearly stronger than the others. 3 John Walker John Walker enters Doomsday as the least powerful of the men to be Captain America. His greatest strength is the physical enhancements provided to him from a recreated super-soldier serum. John has superhuman strength, speed, durability, and more, as well as years of training in combat that make him a formidable fighter. Unfortunately for John, that is where his power ends. He does not possess any exceptional weaponry or suits. He will carry a shield with him in Doomsday, but it is the same one that Sentry bent significantly in Thunderbolts*, making it less protective and unable to be tossed around like a frisbee. John does have a gun to help protect himself, but that won't do much against Doctor Doom and other enhanced individuals. 2 Sam Wilson Sam is Captain America, and he's significantly more powerful than John, so long as he has his suit. Sam is the only Captain America who is not an MCU super soldier after rejecting taking the serum. That leaves him without any superhuman abilities or powers of any kind when he's not in his exosuit. Sam's current Captain America-branded exosuit is extremely powerful, though. It maintains all the usual abilities, like flight and protection, but this one is also made by the Wakandans and crafted out of vibranium, just like the shield he carries. This increases the protective qualities of the suit's wings, as well as grants Sam additional qualities. The Wakandans outfitted Sam's Captain America suit with the ability to shoot blades at enemies. They also gave him the kinetic energy absorption and redistribution technology that T'Challa debuted in Black Panther. That makes him way more powerful than before, as demonstrated in Captain America: Brave New World while fighting Red Hulk. 1 Steve Rogers The strongest version of Captain America in Doomsday is still Steve, even if he doesn't hold the mantle or shield anymore. He has all the same superhuman physical gifts as John, tying him with U.S. Agent immediately. But Steve goes above him, and even Sam, thanks to the weapon he's being paired with. In place of his usual vibranium shield, Steve will wield Mjolnir throughout the movie. Thor's mighty hammer possesses incredible powers that now become Steve's. He can summon and blast lightning on command, as demonstrated in Endgame. It also stands to reason that Steve's physical abilities are increased when using Mjolnir, as is the case for Thor and Jane Foster when they wield the hammer. The movie could give Steve even more abilities through Mjolnir, such as flight or using the fragmentation ability Jane deployed in Thor: Love and Thunder. As long as he has the hammer, Steve is the most powerful version of Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. Just don't expect any fights between the three Captains to solidify who is the strongest.
