The arrest of Vlora Hyseni has dealt a serious blow to the integrity of the Albanian State Intelligence Service that she led and raised questions about the process that led to her appointment. While MPs from the ruling Socialist Party said any wrongdoing by Hyseni was her own, the opposition framed her arrest on Tuesday morning as a matter of national security worthy of parliamentary debate. Special organised crime and corruption prosecutors accuse Hyseni, 42, of disclosing state secrets and aiding a perpetrator, as part of a probe into the alleged rigging of public tenders issued by the National Agency for Information Society, AKSHI, which coordinates the development of state information systems and digitalisation procedures and runs the state public services portal, e-Albania. Attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced Hyseni’s dismissal; President Bajram Begaj issued a decree to that effect on Tuesday evening.
