AirAsia Pushes Back on Rivals Taking Its Place in Malaysia

AirAsia Co-Founder Tony Fernandes dismissed reports Friday that Malaysia’s government was discussing whether rival airlines could absorb some of the carrier's domestic capacity. Fernandes argued that rivals could not automatically absorb AirAsia’s capacity or replicate the cost structure behind its fares. “We are a unique brand … You can’t just step in,” he told reporters and investors at a press conference in Bangkok during a tour of AirAsia’s Southeast Asian offices. He called the reports “misinformation” and said AirAsia has been cutting routes and returning aircraft to preserve cash amid soaring jet fuel costs stemming from the Iran war.
