Air Canada is among the North American carriers that are putting their trust in the Airbus A321XLR when it comes to expanding their network of secondary transatlantic routes to and from Europe. In two months, the Montreal-based Canadian flag carrier and Star Alliance founding member will begin flying the type from Ottawa/Macdonald–Cartier International Airport (YOW) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR). The following day, Air Canada will also begin flying the A321XLR from Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) in Nova Scotia to LHR, as the type takes over from the Boeing 737 MAX 8. Later, the jet will also reintroduce a daytime rotation from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to London and back. Ottawa-London Flights With The A321XLR Are On The Horizon Credit: Air Canada According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, Air Canada is set to begin flying the A321XLR from Ottawa to LHR on December 16, 2026. This will represent the first time that the airline has used the type on a flight to or from Ottawa, and the westbound leg back from LHR is blocked to take up to eight hours. These flights will operate three times a week until late March, when the IATA Summer Schedule begins. Thereafter, the A330-300 will take over with four flights a week, boosting Air Canada's capacity over the busier summer months. This case study highlights the A321XLR's use as a way to serve long-haul routes when demand drops. Airbus' Senior Vice President, Customers, North America, Colin Bole, commented on the aircraft's capabilities in a statement earlier this year. "This aircraft is the perfect tool to support network growth, seamlessly bridging the gap between short-haul and long-haul operations while delivering a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat and the ability to operate with up to 50% SAF." Two More Routes To Follow Credit: Air Canada The day after Air Canada operates the A321XLR between Ottawa and London for the first time, December 17 will also see the type take over from the 737 MAX 8 on the Halifax-Heathrow route. Unlike the seasonal nature of the type's deployment on the route from Ottawa to London, this is a longer-term switch, with the A321XLR scheduled to serve the route until at least August 2027. During this period, Air Canada initially plans to fly the Airbus A321XLR four times a week in each direction between Halifax and London Heathrow. However, when the IATA Winter Schedule switches to the Summer Schedule, this frequency will increase to daily. As the main long-haul gateway to Atlantic Canada, Halifax is a relatively popular destination for transatlantic flights. These flights will operate daily from March 28, offering a useful alternative to the usual overnight flights. During the summer peak, Air Canada will fly five times a day from Toronto to London, with the A321XLR joined by jets from the A330 and 777 series. Lie-Flat Luxury Credit: Air Canada According to ch-aviation, Air Canada has taken delivery of three A321XLRs from an order of 30, with Airbus noting that it handed over the first in April 2026. The aircraft features a two-class seating layout, with the Signature business flatbeds configured in a 1-1 setup.
