As an interesting demonstrator for the power of AI and potentially pressing legal challenges, Claude Code and AI agents have created "open-source, clean-room reimplementation" versions of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premier, and Adobe Lightroom. These new creations from the ArtCraft project are implemented in the Rust programming language. A few Phoronix readers wrote in today about these AI, "open-source" creations from the ArtCraft project that are said to be clean-room implementations of popular Adobe projects. Photocraft is the re-implementation of Adobe Photoshop. Filmcraft is the re-implementation of Adobe Premier for video editing. Lightcraft is the re-implementation of Adobe Lightroom. This new ArtCraft initiative appears to be rely predominantly on AI for coming up with these "clean-room reimplementations" of programs. These "open-source" apps debuted just last week and have already seen multiple new releases thanks to the quick iterations using AI. These apps are available as native Linux binaries, even FreeBSD binaries, macOS, and Windows too. Beyond the GitHub repositories, those wanting to learn more can do so at getartcraft.com.
