(Photo: Digantara)Indian space domain awareness and defence intelligence company Digantara has unveiled MOSAIC, an artificial intelligence-powered optical sensor network designed to give India continuous, real-time tracking of objects in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), marking a significant step toward self-reliance in strategic space surveillance.The Bengaluru-based company said MOSAIC represents a new generation of sovereign space-monitoring capability, reducing dependence on foreign-owned surveillance systems and commercial data providers at a time when space is increasingly becoming a critical military and strategic domain.The announcement comes months after Operation Sindoor, during which India relied on a combination of domestic satellite assets, including ISRO’s Cartosat and RISAT constellations, and commercial imagery reportedly sourced from US-based Maxar Technologies for target validation and post-strike assessment.While the layered approach proved effective, it also highlighted India's continued reliance on external data sources for time-sensitive decision-making. (Photo: Digantara) “MOSAIC is what owning that capability looks like,” Digantara said, describing the system as a fully indigenous network capable of maintaining continuous orbital awareness.The initial deployment consists of five interconnected sensor nodes operating as a coordinated surveillance network. Each node combines an Optical Head Unit for precision sky imaging with an Electronics Head Unit that performs onboard processing, communications, timing and autonomous operations.Designed for deployment in harsh environments, the systems can operate on solar power with battery backup and withstand conditions ranging from the Thar Desert's extreme heat to Himalayan winters.At the heart of MOSAIC is an AI and machine learning-driven detection system capable of identifying stars and Resident Space Objects (RSOs), including faint satellites and orbital debris.The network uses advanced “Lost-in-Space” attitude estimation techniques to determine the position of objects without prior tracking information, allowing it to rapidly detect and catalogue targets.India gets new eyes on orbit.Introducing MOSAIC, our AI-powered Wide Area Sensing Architecture, built to search, detect and track hundreds of objects simultaneously, turning observations into orbital intelligence.Mobile.
