The Jannat franchise could be headed for another chapter, with producer Vishesh Bhatt revealing that work on Jannat 3 is being explored. The update comes nearly 15 years after the release of Jannat 2, with Emraan Hashmi having led both films in the series. However, the third instalment is still at the scripting stage and no details about its cast, story or timeline have been announced yet.In an interview with Zoom, Vishesh Bhatt said that Jannat 3 is among the projects he is now looking at after Awarapan 2. “After Awarapan, I am definitely looking into Jannat 3,” he said. When asked whether the script had been locked, the producer indicated that work on it was still underway. The development comes as Awarapan 2, another Vishesh Films franchise, continues its theatrical run following its August 14 release. Bhatt also spoke about the making of Awarapan 2 during the conversation and rejected the idea that the film was conceived simply to capitalise on the popularity of its predecessor.“Nobody in the market came to buy the film. We put our own money into it. Yes, the market did wake up when the film was ready,” he said, explaining that if the sequel had been made purely as a commercial cash-in, distributors would have shown interest much earlier. What happened in Jannat? Released on May 16, 2008, Jannat starred Emraan Hashmi as Arjun Dixit and Sonal Chauhan as Zoya. Directed by Kunal Deshmukh and produced by Mukesh Bhatt, the romantic crime drama followed Arjun, a young man drawn to gambling and the prospect of making quick money. After meeting Zoya, Arjun's ambitions grew. He moved from small-time gambling to becoming a successful bookie and eventually began working as a match-fixer for underworld don Abu Ibrahim. His increasingly lavish lifestyle, however, brought him to the attention of the police. Arjun was eventually arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. Abu Ibrahim later arranged his release so that he could fix matches during the upcoming World Cup. Arjun eventually attempted to leave his criminal past behind and started working as a bartender while building a life with Zoya, who was pregnant with their child. His attempt at a fresh start did not last. Abu Ibrahim persuaded him to take part in one final operation. After Zoya overheard Arjun's conversation with a bookie, she alerted the police. Arjun was chased and shot. In the final moments, he tried to meet Zoya before surrendering, but was killed when the police mistook his attempt to pick up a ring for an attempt to reach for his gun.The film ended on a bittersweet note, with Zoya and her young son later seen shopping. When Zoya was short of money, her son offered to give up his toy so she could pay, suggesting that he had not inherited his father's obsession with money.Jannat 2 returned with a new storyThe franchise returned in 2012 with Jannat 2, again starring Emraan Hashmi. The sequel also featured Randeep Hooda and Esha Gupta, with Kunal Deshmukh returning as director.Unlike the first film, Jannat 2 centred on the illegal arms trade. Hashmi played Sonu Dilli, a small-time arms dealer who becomes entangled with ACP Pratap Raghuvanshi, played by Randeep Hooda. With Vishesh Bhatt now confirming that Jannat 3 is being explored, the franchise is once again in development. For now, however, the project remains at the scripting stage, with the makers yet to announce whether Emraan Hashmi will return as the central character or reveal what the third chapter will be about.- EndsPublished On: Aug 17, 2026 06:10 IST
