Unlike Batman, many of the best DC Comics supervillains have no alter ego or secret identity to conceal themselves with. They may not always run amok throughout Gotham City dressed in a colorful costume, but villains like Two-Face, Killer Croc, Mister Freeze, and Joker are fairly easy to recognize amongst a crowd. Likewise, some antagonists are all the more intriguing when they choose to go by their real names, like Victor Zsasz, Carmine Falcone, and Dr. Hugo Strange. Meanwhile, some villains’ real names are either public knowledge due to their inability to mask who they truly are or literally never revealed in DC Comics lore, surprisingly. Different DC continuities have decided that Joker would have a real name after all, for instance, but the mainline universe has brilliantly chosen not to wholly commit to one. That said, Joker isn’t the only supervillain whose real name is officially unknown, and DC has unceremoniously and abruptly given one to a villain who’s known for being muscle-bound, dressed like a luchador, breaking Batman’s back over his knee, and snapping Alfred Pennyworth’s neck. Dark Knights of Steel’s King’s Bane has been one of the limited series’ most intriguing characters since he made his first appearance in the spin-off book, Dark Knights of Steel: Tales from the Three Kingdoms. Thanks to solicitations, covers, and now preview pages for Dark Knights of Steel II #4, the King’s Bane’s real name has been revealed, as General Amanda Waller addresses the King’s Bane as “Eduardo.” With Bane being such an iconic Batman villain and never needing to have a real name to bolster his character, it feels sacrilegious to hear that he could have another name, much less to call him anything other than “Bane.” Likewise, while “Eduardo” may be the King’s Bane’s real name in Dark Knights of Steel’s original lore, that doesn’t suggest “Eduardo” is what his real name secretly is in mainline DC Comics lore. It seems as if he was only given a proper, ‘real’ name because characters would need to continue referring to him as “the King’s Bane” otherwise, and, while that’s a phenomenal renaming of the character for Dark Knights of Steel’s medieval fantasy universe, it doesn’t necessarily roll off the tongue in dialogue. To be fair, though, it humanizes the King’s Bane to give him an ordinary name, and may suggest that Waller has great respect or admiration toward him. Prince Bruce Wayne has played a surprisingly small role in Dark Knights of Steel II’s story thus far, which has obviously enabled Waller to play her pawns, knights, bishops, and rooks against the House of El and the kingdoms of Metropolis, Amazonia, and Storms. Of course, considering that the King’s Bane was who trained a young Prince Bruce how to fight, and that Prince Bruce was responsible for severing Eduardo’s magic and having him imprisoned in the El palace’s dungeon all this time, it would be incredibly baffling if the Bat-Prince and the King’s Bane never met once again. The solicitation for Dark Knights of Steel II #4 reads as follows: THE SUICIDE SQUAD TAKES AIM FOR THE THRONE! General Amanda Waller’s traitorous gambit for the throne has come to fruition, and she’s recruited a murderous squad to cut down any who dares stand in her way. Just how deep does the rot of her corruption run? And who will be left standing once she is crowned regent of the Kingdom of Metropolis at the zenith of her power? Dark Knights of Steel II #4 is scheduled to be released on October 21, 2026.
