Academia’s meltdown over Trump’s science plan isn’t about policy. It’s about the cover letter

It seems that some of the scientific establishment are more concerned with political science than actual science.Just look at their response to the Trump administration’s recent report, “Science: A New Golden Age.”If you listened to only the loudest critics, you’d think the Trump administration is trying to send us back to the Stone Age. The Union of Concerned Scientists lambasted the report as “a grave threat to independent science within and beyond the federal government.” Science magazine said that researchers warned the report “could do more harm than good.” The American Association of University Professors warned the report would “weaken” scientific independence. What is in this document that will supposedly undermine America’s scientific enterprise? By and large, a collection of high-impact, private-sector-inspired reforms to fix the brokenness of the American scientific and innovation ecosystem. Opposition isn’t driven by real concern for science, but by partisanship, because everyone knows the system is broken.Let’s start with reproducibility and bias.For years, the left has complained about industry-funded science producing results on demand. The right has highlighted the danger of pandemic groupthink, fraudulent research, and a scientific establishment that closed ranks against dissent. Both concerns point to the same underlying failure: an enterprise whose incentive structures reward publication over truth.The report names it directly. It cites a landmark study where fewer than 40 of 100 psychology experiments could be reproduced by independent researchers. In Alzheimer’s research, a celebrated 2009 paper presented a promising treatment pathway, attracted more than 800 citations, redirected a decade of federal funding, and turned out to be based on manipulated data. Its author became a university president.This is not an isolated scandal but a systemic failure: a scientific culture that, as the report says, “pressures researchers to deliver results in confident, discrete units,” where “journal editors want clear narratives” and “nuance dies… in the race for attention.”The proposed fix is a new order mandating reproducibility, transparency, data sharing, and falsifiability across all federally funded research.In the face of institutional sclerosis, the report is even more ambitious. First, it notes that the American federal science enterprise distributes approximately $200 billion in annual R&D funding through a system built in 1945 and barely updated since. The results are exactly what you would expect from any government program insulated from competitive pressure for 80 years.Grant applications now take nearly two years from submission to award — almost as long as it took to design and produce the Boeing 747. Researchers spend 44% of their federally funded time on paperwork rather than research.The report’s proposed solutions break new ground by accelerating the selection process and opening up opportunities to researchers who are not considered part of the “scientific community”. For instance, golden tickets that allow individual reviewers to champion unconventional proposals that consensus panels would kill if the innovator lacked what they consider the requisite credentials or degrees. Fast grants with 48-hour decisions instead of nine-month review cycles, with applications that take 30 minutes rather than months. And most significantly, NSF’s new X-Labs — the first federal program explicitly designed to fund research organizations outside traditional academic institutions, staffed by career scientists, pursuing specific bottlenecks with milestone-based funding and operational autonomy.None of these are partisan ideas. They are borrowed from the private sector, from successful foreign and philanthropic models, and from what the evidence shows actually produces breakthrough science.Finally, nobody can deny that America is losing its scientific preeminence. China’s R&D spending has reached full parity with the United States on a purchasing-power-adjusted basis. Furthermore, we are losing out on capturing the economic returns from manufacturing many scientific discoveries. America pioneered lithium-ion batteries, which not only sustain consumer electronics but are also necessary for EVs and renewable energy storage. But Asia dominates the lithium industry, and China leads in the fast-growing renewable sector that the U.S. helped start. If we want to regain the edge, particularly in rapidly growing clean energy sectors like EVs, batteries, and advanced grid-securing technologies, we have to fix our broken R&D system.Rather than merely throwing more dollars at the problem, the report offers out-of-the-box proposals to streamline industry access to DOE national laboratories, reform the technology transfer agreements that have long bottlenecked commercialization, and build regional clusters where research and production occur in the same geographic area.TRUMP’S FDA FOLLOWED THE SCIENCE ON VAPING. POLITICIANS ARE FURIOUSWe need science that is objective, innovative, and deployable without wasting taxpayer dollars.
