Abhi’s Indian Restaurant

Good Food hat15/20Updated October 26, 2026,first published November 11, 2024Abhi's Indian RestaurantIndian$$Pioneering Indian with a big line in comfort food. It’s hard to imagine Sydney without Abhi’s, and thankfully for the past 35 years or so, we haven’t had to. Kumar and Suba Mahadevan opened the restaurant in 1990, and the cosy dining room, its walls coated in silvery wallpaper, has pulled a spice-loving crowd ever since. Kumar’s contribution to the Sydney hospitality scene was recognised with a Legend Award in last year’s Good Food Guide, and all the staples that helped make his name are present and correct, from smoky tandoor-roasted lamb cutlets to fall-off-the-bone Punjabi goat curry and creamy dhal makhan. While the towering palak patta chaat, centred around a deep-fried spinach leaf and covered in yoghurt, is still a must-order, it also pays to look outside the tried and true. To a pot of scallops and prawns, perhaps, slick with spice-tinted oil and crunchy with curry leaves, served with wood-fired garlic naan. Big shout-out to the good-value wine list, generous BYO, and to restaurants built from family pride, hard work and a pioneering spirit.Best for: Going old school, but still finding new favourites.Good Food reviews are booked anonymously and paid independently.
