Abdul el Sayed says ‘there’s always room’ for anti-Israel voices in Democratic Party

Michigan Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul el Sayed indicated there was room in the Democratic Party for both pro and anti-Israel figures, aiming to shift attention elsewhere.In an appearance on CNN’s State of the Nation, Sayed was asked about previous comments in which he indicated that support for Israel may disqualify people from being part of the Democratic Party. He responded by indicating that he now believed there was room for people for and against Israel.“There’s always room in the tent for folks, and I’m for human rights. I’m for equal rights to peace, dignity, and self-determination,” he responded. Sayed then shifted the conversation to financial support for Israel, portraying his objections as a common-sense opposition to using tax dollars on anyone but Americans.“Whatever you think about the right of Israel to exist, I wonder if they have a right to our tax dollars. And here’s the thing about it: Every time I come on CNN, you guys ask me the same questions about these theoretical rights of existence, or whether or not I agree with the mayor of New York. I’m running for Senate in Michigan, and in Michigan, people can’t afford their basic needs. The issue has come to consume much of the party’s energy, with hardly a Democratic event going by without disruptions from pro-Palestinian activists.
