A more economical Hyundai Bayon will come. Here's when

Hyundai will introduce a CNG-powered Bayon SUV by 2027, offering buyers a more economical alternative to petrol. The new variant is expected to retain the 1.5-litre engine.New Delhi,Oct 27, 2026 17:08 ISTHyundai is set to expand the Bayon SUV lineup with a CNG option by 2027, giving buyers a more economical alternative to the petrol-powered model. The upcoming CNG version is expected to retain the SUV’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, with a slightly lower power output to accommodate the alternative fuel system. The Bayon was recently launched in India at an introductory starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), becoming Hyundai Motor India’s second offering in the mid-size SUV segment alongside the Creta. Bookings are open through Hyundai’s official website and authorised dealerships for a token amount of Rs 11,000.Hyundai Bayon CNG: Engine and gearboxThe Bayon CNG is expected to use the existing 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated MPi engine, which produces 115bhp and 144Nm of torque in its petrol-only configuration. The CNG version is likely to deliver marginally lower output, although Hyundai has yet to confirm its specifications. The petrol-powered Bayon is available with a six-speed manual gearbox and an Intelligent Variable Transmission (iVT), a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CNG variant is likely to be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the availability of an automatic transmission remains uncertain. Hyundai has also not confirmed the CNG tank configuration. The manufacturer could opt for an underbody tank arrangement or twin-cylinder tanks, with the final packaging likely to influence the amount of boot space available.Hyundai Bayon CNG: Expected priceThe CNG version is expected to carry a premium over the corresponding petrol variants, although official pricing details are yet to be announced. The petrol Bayon is priced from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 18.15 lakh (ex-showroom), with the starting price being introductory. The addition of a CNG option could make the Bayon a more cost-effective proposition for buyers with high daily running, particularly those looking to reduce fuel expenses without moving to a smaller vehicle. It would also expand Hyundai’s alternative-fuel portfolio in India.Hyundai Bayon: Features and dimensionsThe Bayon measures 4,245mm in length, 1,810mm in width and has a wheelbase of 2,600mm, along with 205mm of ground clearance. It offers 505 litres of boot space in its petrol configuration, although the luggage capacity of the CNG version will depend on the tank layout. The SUV features a dual-screen dashboard with two 12.3-inch displays, Hyundai’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit, Bluelink connected-car technology and over-the-air updates for up to 19 vehicle controllers. It also introduces Hyundai Motor India’s first generative AI voice assistant, integrating Perplexity intelligence and SoundHound AI voice technology. The Bayon competes in the mid-size SUV segment, where it faces rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Victoris. The arrival of the CNG variant in 2027 could give Hyundai an additional option for buyers prioritising running costs alongside space, features and everyday usability.Subscribe to Auto Today Magazine - Ends
