There’s rumours of a Jak And Daxter movie, weirdly (Sony Interactive Entertainment) With rumours claiming that Sony is looking to revive several of its older PS1, PS2, and PS3 franchises for the next generation, a reader names the games he’d like to see get a reboot. I saw the news this week that Sony is considering bringing back many of its dead franchises that we haven’t seen for a long time, as launch games for the PlayStation 6. I know remakes and reboots are no replacement for completely new games, but I won’t pretend I’m not looking forward to the potential of the idea, since Sony is sitting on a ton of games that haven’t had new entries in forever. The ones rumoured so far are Sly Cooper and Killzone, which I’m not interested in, and Ape Escape, which I am. Ape Escape seems to be the most definite of them all, with the developer behind Sonic Mania apparently doing it. Team Asobi would be the obvious choice, but I’ll take that as a second options. So, I’ve done the obvious and drawn up a list of games that haven’t been mention but which I hope are going to be tackled. I’ve also tried to suggest a developer for it, if I can think of one. Jak And Daxter – Naughty Dog during the PlayStation 2 era were like a completely different developer with this franchise. I didn’t really like the second two games, which took themselves way too seriously, but the first one was great and better than Banjo-Kazooie, if you ask me. So… why not have Playtonic make a new one? They really feel like they could do a lot of good work with a bigger budget and I’d like to see that. Resistance – The opposite of Jak And Daxter, in that I think the first two were pretty meh but I really liked the third one. Unfortunately, just as the series got into its grove Sony stopped making them, presumably because they weren’t selling anymore. As a horror themed first person shooter I feel the team that made Dead Island 2 could probably make a good job of it, although I think they might be owned by their publisher. Want GTA 6 news? MotorStorm – I took advantage of GC’s tip about Star Wars: Galactic Racer being free on Amazon Luna and loved it. I also got a lot of MotorStorm vibes off it, maybe even some of the same team worked on it, given they’re both British games. They’re not really similar, because you drive proper cars and bikes in MotorStorm, but good arcade racers are so rare nowadays that I’d love to see more. WipEout – It’s a real shame WipEout wasn’t bigger in the US or Japan but because it was only big in Europe Sony were quick to drop it. Admittedly, future racers in general haven’t been major sellers in recent times but I again point you towards Star Wars: Galactic Racer. Also, I bet Sony still has some veterans of the original games working for them somewhere, I think at one of their VR developers or something? PaRappa The Rapper – I really miss rhythm action games and I’m not really sure who to suggest rebooting this one. I tried to look up Ouendan maker iNiS but I think they’ve gone bust. [They’re called Liona Interactive now, but they haven’t made a new game in a long time – GC] But PaRappa The Rapper was great – really great music, innovative gameplay for the time, and overall fun and loveable. Not the sort of game you can charge £70 for but I don’t think that’s the point of these reboots. Gravity Rush – Neither game was particularly popular, I get that, and they did try with a remaster and a sequel but I love this series and I love Kat. The anti-gravity gameplay was really clever and I’d love to see it expanded on with modern technology (I’m not sure they ever really suited being portable games). Not sure who would do it, considering Sony shut down Japan Studio but that’s the problem with a lot of these. Warhawk – Considering Sony’s obsession with live service games I’m really surprised this one hasn’t come back already. It was basically Battlefield but more arcadey and easier to get into, with lots of vehicles and a sci-fi edge. The sequel Starhawk went even further in that direction and I loved them both. When you’ve got rubbish like Fairgames being mocked years before it comes out I do not understand why this was never on Sony’s to-do list.
