6 Kaiju Who Should Join The Monsterverse, Ranked By How Much They Deserve A Comeback

Dozens of Godzilla movies, not to mention a slew of kaiju films adjacent to the sprawling Godzilla franchise, has lent the Monsterverse a jam-packed library of creatures to pick from. Most of them haven't been seen in decades, and among them are several monsters greatly deserving of epic comebacks. So far, only a handful of Godzilla's villains and allies have been brought back into relevance by the Monsterverse. Godzilla: King of the Monsters revived Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, and Godzilla vs. Kong featured a surprise appearance from Mechagodzilla. And based on some credible evidence, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is poised to bring back SpaceGodzilla, who was previously just a one-off villain who famously fought Godzilla in the 1994 release, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. Since there hasn't even been a trailer for Supernova yet, it's at least possible that other returning monsters will be on hand as well. And that's only one opportunity for the Monsterverse to feature familiar Toho kaiju, given that Apple TV's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters show is still ongoing and its Cold War-era spinoff is still awaiting its debut. Plus, more Godzilla and Kong movies could follow Supernova if it's successful. Based on the avenues available, it would be disappointing if SpaceGodzilla were the only Toho kaiju to make the jump to the Monsterverse in the near future. Hopefully, he'll be joined by at least one or two other monsters in need of a proper, live-action resurgence, either due to the length of time they've been out of the spotlight or the untapped potential they offer. Gorosaurus Introduced in 1967's King Kong Escapes, Gorosaurus is an allosuarus-inspired kaiju who fought (and lost) to Toho's take on King Kong. Two years later, he reappeared in Destroy All Monsters, where he was depicted as one of the many residents of Godzilla's home, Monster Island. Here, Gorosaurus distinguished himself by using his signature move - the kangaroo kick - as the coup de grace against King Ghidorah during the film's grand finale. Unfortunately, Gorosaurus never broke out of obscurity, leaving Destroy All Monsters as his second and final movie role. Considering that it's now been 58 years since Gorosaurus last appeared in a movie, he's long overdue a return, preferably as an ally to Godzilla. And if he did, he could fill a special niche, as despite its extremely diverse lineup, the Monsterverse still doesn't have a major Titan that looks like an actual dinosaur. Gorosaurus would fix that. Destoroyah Destoroyah hasn't been absent from the big screen for as long as Gorosaurus and a long list of other Toho kaiju, but his overall significance to the franchise makes him a monster who shouldn't be permanently relegated to the sidelines. In the final film of the Heisei series, Toho introduced Destoroyah, a creature clearly intended to serve as the ultimate Godzilla foe. And the origin story it gave him was perfectly symbolic; Destoroyah was created as a consequence of the use of the Oxygen Destroyer in 1954, making him the personification of the very weapon notorious for killing Godzilla in the first place. His menacing design, incredible power level, and reputation as the villain that Godzilla had to die to defeat cemented his place in franchise history as one of Godzilla's greatest villains. By bringing back Destoroyah, the Monsterverse can set the stakes higher than ever, and in the process, generate real concern that Godzilla's time may be up. And the setup for that to happen is already there, considering that the military deployed the Oxygen Destroyer in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Varan Had things worked out differently, Godzilla would have faced an entirely different monster in his final Heisei movie, rather than Destoroyah. Earlier plans for the project called for Godzilla to face Varan, the titular villain of the 1958 black and white kaiju film, Varan the Unbelievable. According to The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films by John DeMay, there was an intention to revive the nearly forgotten kaiju as "the harbinger of the apocalypse," but ultimately, the idea was scrapped. Interestingly, that effort accounts for only one of several attempts to pit Varan against Godzilla, none of which ever got far. But it's not hard to understand why so many filmmakers wanted a Godzilla vs. Varan story. Varan is special because of his unique versatility. Varan's physiology, which is inspired partially by the flying squirrel, enables him to be a threat in the water, the sky, and on land. And yet, his only appearance in a Godzilla movie was a small, non-combat role in Destroy All Monsters. King Caesar King Caesar has two movie appearances, the first being 1974's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, which featured him as the dog-like guardian monster who teamed up with Godzilla to defeat his robotic counterpart. With his visually appealing Prism Eye beam blast and impressive martial arts prowess, King Caesar was a wild addition to Toho's monster lineup, and arguably one of the most memorable parts of the film. Unlike Varan and Gorosaurus, King Caesar did get a chance for a return in a 21st century Godzilla movie, having appeared in Godzilla: Final Wars. However, his cameo would have been a disappointment to anyone expecting King Caesar to make a contribution to Godzilla's victory. Instead, a mind-controlled King Caesar was quickly and decisively beaten by Godzilla alongside Anguirus and Rodan. It was hardly the comeback King Caesar deserved, but thanks to the Monsterverse, there's still good reason to see him again. Based on the backstory Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla handed him, it's not hard to imagine King Caesar as one of the benevolent Titans hibernating somewhere in the Monsterverse's Hollow Earth world. Hedorah Another classic monster to make an unremarkable return in Godzilla: Final Wars was Hedorah. Also known as the Smog Monster, Hedorah is a mysterious, blob-shaped kaiju that feeds on pollution. It may not look as imposing as the likes of Destoroyah or Biollante, but Hedorah posed a great challenge to Godzilla nonetheless, in that the creature's body makeup seemingly made him impervious from harm, forcing the humans to help Godzilla find and exploit its weakness. The psychedelic atmosphere of 1971's Godzilla vs. Hedorah made it perfectly suited for its time, but that's not to say that Hedorah's relevance has run its own course. Hedorah's entire existence was predicated on the perception that humanity is a threat to the planet, which is a long-running theme of the franchise as a whole. It's been represented in the Monsterverse too, hence why Hedorah would be an appropriate choice for a future opponent to its take on Godzilla. Anguirus Although he was first introduced as an enemy to Godzilla in Godzilla Raids Again, the anklyosaurus-like kaiju known as Anguirus has since cultivated a reputation as one of Godzilla's best (and most likable) allies. Anguirus helped Godzilla defeat Ghidorah in Destroy All Monsters, and joined him in an epic two-on-two showdown against Ghidorah and Gigan in Godzilla vs. Gigan. The finale of the movie is now fondly remembered by many as one of the most entertaining Godzilla battles of all time. He had other appearances afterward, but sadly, Anguirus and Godzilla never fought together again after Godzilla vs. Gigan. There's long been hope among fans that the Monsterverse would introduce its own Anguirus, especially since King of the Monsters featured an Anguirus skeleton as an Easter egg in Godzilla's underwater temple. But so far, that hasn't panned out. However, with Kong gaining a new friend in the form of Shimo in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it would make sense to do the same for Godzilla by featuring his classic sidekick. Such a scenario would pave the way for a thrilling four-way team-up in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
